420 DA Thread

PUMP OUT QUESTION

On my old 290 Sundancer, the waste deck fill was horizontal and I never had any issues with dripping of any waste as I disconnected the pumpout hose when I finished.

On the 420DA the waste deck fill is vertical and down near the swim platform I always have a few nasty drips that have to be hosed down / disinfected when I disconnect the pump out hose.

Have you all had this same problem? Do you have any techniques to “avoid the nasty drips”?

I’m going to order this from Amazon (I assume this will fit our deck fittings):

AMRS-310343502 * Sealand Nozall 1.5" Pumpout Adpater for Marine Holding Tanks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NJ7SQV6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_KZSkDbK7JD3BK

I’m surprised nobody on this thread suggested this.

Most of the marinas around here have those in 2 or 3 different thread sizes to fit all the different boats.
Surprised they aren't mandatory in Ca.

I had never even seen a waste screw on fitting before I used a pump out service while on a weekend to Catalina Island over Memorial Day. As he cleanly pumped me out without making a mess - I thought “that’s a great idea”!

I have always self pumped at both the Chicago Harbor District marinas as well as the Marina del Rey marinas and the self service pumps always just have the universal rubber like pictured here:

Maybe at unmanned self service locations they are worried that the adapters will disappear?

SIM Module replacement question.

Port gauges started fluctuating and then just stopped working. I began in back of helm E120 panel with disconnecting and cleaning connection terminals. Did the same with System View connections. Still no change and no port data on System View. Removed the connection at the SIM module on engine and cleaned and started to work. For an hour then stopped. Today I disconnected SIM module again along with others behind helm and started working again. I think something is up with SIM module. Has anyone experienced something similar and had to replace SIM module? Do they have to be programmed again by a Cummins or Mercury tech? All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ah, gotcha on the self serv. locations. 2 or 3 on a small cable with a piece of pool noodle for flotation is what I see a lot. But in the self serv. case, I can see where having the correct adaptor on board would be a good idea. It will lock right on to the white valve, but now you have something else to clean and store.
Happy pumping.

Today I replaced the "obsolete" phone jack in the Salon with a matching USB jack that charges my phone *and* allows my to play the songs on my phone on my stereo:

I posted a full "step by step" with links on the Fusion stereo discussion thread: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/why-fusion.92375/page-3#post-1071520

I am next going to add a charging only USB to the master Salon - will post updates when I do it ...

Hi all....just got back from a 10 day adventure with the family, with stops including Cape May New Jersey, Ocean City Maryland, Lewes Delaware, Fire Island New York, Atlantic Beach New York and home to Long Beach Island New Jersey. The boat performed beautifully with an average cruise speed of 22 knots at 2150 RPM, 36 gph, .6NMPG. Feel free to contact me for details if any questions.

CORRECTION....I had this issue.....at some point I noticed my anchor loosened from the windlass while out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, but luckily the safety clip was in place so it did not drop while under way. I went out there and went to reel in the anchor using power foot switch and the chain seemed to be slipping on the windlass. So I took off the rarely used winch handle and went to manually reel it in the few inches and this shaft snapped:

1. Why is the windlass slipping?
2. Is this snapped shaft piece a replaceable item/part?

I've got to research this problem. Any insights or guidance?

@brewster16 - Did trip to Catalina over 4th of July. My stats were different - some probably due to Gas vs Diesel:

3,200 RPM
15-17 knots
32-34 gph

Load: full gas // water // empty waste // loaded dinghy on back // six persons (2 adults / 4 teens)

Gas dock in Marina del Rey also has significant price difference between Gas & Diesel (I have gas):

Wow! At those prices I would have to consider other hobbies! :) Diesel here in my part of NJ is running $2.90 to $3.00. Gas is about 20 cents more.

It’s ironic because as I leave the Marina heading south into Santa Monica Bay I literally navigate around the Chevron oil tanker ships offloading crude into the largest Chevron refinery on the west coast. The gas prices are crazy from a combination of monopoly (only one gas dock in a Marina with over 4000 boats) as well as high taxes. I’ve resorted to sometimes filling 5g cans @ Costco.

Has anyone used this product and if so, are there tangible benefits? Diesel Kleen Fuel Additive

I use Diesel Kleen....but I can't pinpoint any other benefits than I have never had any issue with the engines running clean and strong. But, I also use my boat a lot. So fresh fuel is always running through my tanks.

** Default location of Fluxgate Compass on 420/440?? **

I have been having some intermittent issues with my Autopilot that Raymarine believes may be related to interference with magnetic objects placed too close to the Fluxgate compass.

The Raymarine Autopilot on my 420 was original / factory installed. Does anybody know where Sea Ray installed the Fluxgate compass by default and how I can get to it?

Here is a pic of what it is supposed to look like:

Thanks!

I was told the autopilot compass was located near the "glovebox" to the left of steering wheel. I once won some stereo speakers in a raffle and stored them in the back bedroom in their box....It took me a while to figure out they were making my autopilot steer willy nilly. It could be as simple as a cell phone too close too. I have had no problems since I moved the speakers/magnets from underneath.

It's behind the glove box.

Diesel Kleen. I use it. Not 100% of the time, but mostly. I also try to buy diesel with ValvTec. Like Brewster said, I use it and I haven't had any problems.

Ok and thanks. Heard about it but from others with different diesel power. No harm. I was/am concerned about keeping injection system clean. I know the POSPO did nothing. Thanks again
