OFFICIAL 390/40 Motor Yacht Thread

Hi guys! I’m thinking about updating some of the electronics onboard and am wondering if we currently have the NMEA 2000 “backbone “ or if I need to update that as well? Any thoughts?

Thanks

Fin
You likely do not have NMEA 2000 unless there was an upgrade by a PO. Our 2008 was one of the last of the family built and didn't use 2000 as originally delivered. You might want to post a picture of your dash; I'm sure members here will help you figure out what you have. Better yet, pull out the dash (easy to do by after removing the screws on the perimeter) and take some shots of what is back there.
We upgraded from the original all-Raymarine to all-Garmin a couple of years ago and most of the needed NMEA 2000 components came with the new chart plotters.

I am considering a 2006 40 Motor Yacht with 425hp Cummins engines. To any that have this set up what is the real world performance and sea keeping of this boat? Also any other opinions on this boat good or bad and would you buy it again.

Thanks

The QSB engines have been highly reliable and trouble-free in my experience. They don't seem to have any major family issues such as are seen in other models. I would recommend an engine survey separate from a hull survey if you go to purchase. If there is a local Cummins facility nearby that services marine engines then they are a good choice. The only large potential issue I have heard about is making sure aftercooler maintenance has been done and that they are in good shape.
As to performance, with a clean hull, speed at WOT for me is about 28 knots while economical cruise on plane is about 20 knots at a fuel burn about .75 NM per gallon. The shape of the hull results in a ride that is a little more tender and lively than a Dancer in a seaway.
You probably already know that the boat is very roomy with a huge master for its length/beam. I love the proximity of the helm to the cockpit. The hardtop along with bridge AC creates a very comfortable environment for cruising. The AC won't create an icebox in the hottest weather but it will still take the edge off. The only really annoying design issue IMO is the placement of the hot water heater which is only a problem with a washer/dryer most seem to have. I've had mine about ten years now and would certainly buy it again.

Well, it looks like I am a survey and a sea trial away from being a fellow Sea Ray Motor Yacht owner! I have a contract in place for a very clean, well maintained, well equipped, low hour, diesel 2005 390MY. Aside from the model, diesel engines, age and condition of the boat, it also has 4 of our "nice to have" features: an extended swim platform, a dinghy/tender, a bow thruster, and a transferable slip at one of our top choices for a marina.

Keeping my fingers crossed that the boat is healthy.

Got a question, I have the same boat as you. The engine lo oil pressure warning on both engines does not work. The previous 2 owners said it did not work for them, either. Does yours work, and if so, does the warning come out of the system monitor or the Smartcraft. Thanks

Rob, SO excited for you!! I've had mine for half of a season... made all sorts of mods this winter... was all geared up to move her to the harbor this weekend... and... devastating news when they put her back in the water... Starboard fuel tank leaking on the bottom... non repairable, has to be replaced which is a major, major job. They are pressure testing the port tank to see if it is compromised or not and if not, rig the engines to run off one tank so I can get early season in as I have to order the new tanks to be manufactured. Truly knocked the wind out of me in terms of my plans for the season. I started an insurance claim on a wing and a prayer but my broker says he's not sure if it's covered or not. We will see. Anyhow... they tell me that this is a one in a million thing to have happen. By the time I get this done, the boat will essentially be brand new, which is crazy... because I have fixed or replaced just about everything else back to new or better. Soon as I get my hands on her I will post pics and describe the mods I have done as it is really hard to find concrete info about these boats on the web. Good luck and God's speed on your journey!

Anyone have a clue where to find a replacement window for the aft cabin kick out window. Neither Sea Ray nor Taylor Made have it or manufacture it any more.

Try Flounder Pounder (fpmarine.com), they may have it, especially if it was used across more than one model. Otherwise there are plexiglass fabricators out there, I would not think making a new one would be a huge challenge.

Hello all. Considering purchasing a 390 MY that doesn’t have the cockpit air conditioning. Is the boat plumbed for the additional unit making for an “easy” install? I see a place for the breaker but unsure if here is ducting, vents, power for compressor, thru hulls, water pumps etc that all need to be installed for the extra unit. Thanks.

Thanks. There is a pretty low inventory of quality boats where I am and I’ve learned I need to make some compromises. I’m trying to get a feel for what an Install will cost me. I assume it does not have it as it has a blank in the distribution panel for cockpit air. Has three other units with switches.

I don't know if non-AC boats were made ready for AC or not; hopefully someone who has seen one will chime in. But, here are some thoughts on what you can look for:
- All the AC units operate off a single pump right aft of the starboard engine. Check the manifold coming off the pump to see if there is a fourth outlet.
- The overboard for the cockpit AC is the aftermost of three amidships on the starboard side so see if that is there.
- The cockpit AC ducting is pretty simple. There is a large register on the back end of the helm seats just above the sink then three smaller circular registers around the helm, one just forward of the magnetic compass and two on the port side of the dash.
- The cockpit AC consists of an air handler built into the base of the helm seating. The compressor is down in the same compartment as the salon AC.
Even without plumbing I am thinking AC would be relatively easy to add but I'm no expert. Hope this helps.

Sounds like it does not have it. Mine has it and there is a breaker for it (no blank). There is a blank for "Salon Air Conditioner #2" though.

Also, the cockpit AC compressor is next to the salon AC unit. The air handler is under the helm seat. In the attached pic, you can see the salon unit on the right and the cockpit compressor on the left.

Just a note, My 390MY does have helm A/C however it stopped working. I am considering replacement from the existing split system to a self-contained unit. I measured under the helm seat and the unit will fit. Called Dometic and the existing pump which is a PMA 1000 has the head and capacity of flow for a 16000btu unit that said it may need to be upgraded to the next size if issues occure. Some additional considerations you will need to make: 1-Raw water pump capacity needs to be 3 gal per min. per cooling ton. 2- controller location. 3- Relay panel for water pump will need to be for 4 a/c units.

Should be an easy add, lots of room, make sure you get panel tools, lots of those christmas tree push-in fasteners.

Great info. What would be your guess as far as out the door cost for installation. I dont live locally and bigger projects are hard for me to do at the dock.

Done. Thanks.

So in consideration of this boat, the three “misgivings” I have are: no helm AC, needs extended swim platform to be functional for my family, and what appears to be a lack of comfortable cockpit lounging options.

Money can of course fix most things, but I start to get pushed into another price point when I add $20k to this boat to be usable for me and thus other boats that become competitive.

Can anyone share pictures or experiences making the cockpit/helm area comfortable for relaxing and socializing. Currently one bench seat facing away from the water doesn’t seem be ideal. The boat has so many good qualities that I don’t want to overlook easy solutions to “my” problems!

We have had ours for about a year, you will want the cockpit air. The heat will come in handy in the fall. We just had our aft cabin unit replaced and upgraded. It cost about $4,500. I personally would not worry about an extended swim platform it hasn't been an issue for us. We love the cockpit social area. We added sea deck and upgraded our tvs so you might consider that in your budgeting. We love ours.
