i have lost several keys when the cheap pull chain float chain would break at the worst possible time.

I was asking for a better chain at a local marine store to make my key float sets more robust and a guy behind me turned me on to these stainless covered wire keychains with a screw clasp. I got 20 for $7 on amazon. Much better!

Good idea.

Don't forget the loctite :) Or a piece of fishing line stuck into the female side when you screw in the male side.

They have about 7 thread engagement, so I don’t think these will come apart easily without noticing the barrel is loose. I’d like to be able to add/remove, so loctite might be a little too permanent...even blue loctite. Fishing line is an interesting idea.

I was being a little funny with the loctite ;)

+1 I went the way of this type connector several years ago after I had the crappy ball chain broke losing all of my keys too...

We have a key for each of the engines and those keys are on their own float, but they never leave the boat and are not taken outside the cabin.

No way to lose the keys with these constraints.

I go this route...knock on wood, have never had an issue.

That’s where mine stay.
The cabin key stays with me though. Everyone in the family has one on their keychain and I stash a spare for emergencies.

We do keep a spare cabin door key hidden on the boat so that people who work on the boat can get into the interior of the boat. So far there are only 3 people outside my family who know where that key is.

I have not locked our cabin door in years...

I know that if you go to a Sea Ray dealer with your HIN (and probably proof of ownership - can't remember that one for sure), they'll sell you a new key that'll fit your boat. If I remember correctly, they have 16 different keys that cover all boats. Or at least all boats in the year range of mine. I bought Lake Union Sea Ray's entire stock of 3 a couple of years back. All because of a bad key chain and a dock that looked more like an industrial cat walk than a dock. :(
