Who has cut the cord?

The main reason I haven't made the switch for the past few years is if the Admiral or the kids have to work 2 different remotes to get to the app they want to use I would be getting calls all day. I would like them to pick up the remote and go straight to the app they need and load what they want to watch. If they have to change inputs it would be a mess. Tried this with apple tv and they were frustrated. i don't see Hulu, Roku or Netflix not being supported anytime soon. i should also preface this with my current tv is well over 8 years old. I probably pay more in power consumption for that tv than i do for Comcast:(

Inputs would only be for "other" devices like XBOX's etc. Something like a FireTV can control the apps and the new remotes will even control power/volume for the TV (I have not tested this yet though as I have not picked up one yet). In the FireTV you will be able to go in and out of the apps (including the TV app you choose - in my case Playstation Vue). But the family uses other Amazon content, Netflix etc. If you use a OTG USB "Y" adapter you can even watch moves from a thumb drive running an app like VLC.

Lol! 8 years old is a baby. One of the TV’s in my house is a 1080P plasma that is over 11 years old and keep it because the picture is beautiful on it.
My kids are okay, but my wife is another story. She would have a lot of problems if she had to switch between multiple inputs. She is from another time. She still can’t figure out how to use the Bluetooth hands free phone in her car, and occasionally has problems with the power windows.
The good news is that is becoming less and less necessary to switch between a bunch of inputs and have multiple devices.
All of the smart tv’s I’ve gotten in the last few years have Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, Crackle, and other apps right in the menu.
If you go with a streaming service that isn’t available directly from your particular smart TV you can opt to use a third party device plugged in to an HDMI on your TV and make it a one button operation.
I’ve been using Roku devices on my non smart TV’s for several years and have found them to be super easy to use and of great quality, but there are a lot of choices out there.

Kevin, I’ve got a “Logitech Harmony 650” universal remote that I paid about $40.00 for almost 3 years ago. I use it with the 80” in my mancave. That TV is connected to a Fios Box, a sound bar, and a Blu Ray player. (that we never use anymore) I got it to avoid having to use 4 remotes.
It works great, and makes it all pretty much one button operation. I can even get directly to the Netflix and Prime Video Apps on the TV with it. I can even use it when to control the volume on the sound bar when I’m streaming music to it instead of watching TV.
They probably have a newer model by now.
I keep the 4 seperate remotes for the TV, Blu Ray, Sound Bar & Fios Box in a nearby drawer, but never really have to go to them.

We have the same overpriced setup. My wife is fully onboard. Going to replace our main family room tv for a more stream friendly smart tv.
You don't need to replace the TV (unless it's an old one), just get a streaming device like Roku or Firestick, etc.

I know, its an old TV so for the easy of use of the smart TV its worth it. I'll just relocate it to my man cave where i'm the only one that really uses it and add a device that supports the playstation vue.

Thats my plan. I think i may try out the Playstation Vue service. Worse case we don't like it and we try another. Between that, netflix and amazon video i think we should be fine. I think all the kids need for now is access to Youtube and an easy way to get to it on the smart tv without flipping through inputs. I've only been to 2 locations (Block Island and CuttyHunk) in the past few years that had crappy cell data coverage. We'll have to break out the board games in those instances and chalk it up to quality family time.
The Roku TV is pretty good in that they don't need to cycle through HDMI inputs to get to the streaming stuff and can flip around from the home screen menu easily. Picture is great as well. We have a 28" model in the salon and it fits well in the cabinetry of our current boat.

We just subscribed to Direct TV Now a couple of weeks ago.
If you have strong wifi signal it seems to work great.
40$ a month with no contract.

Quick update on our experience so far. Canceled cable at home and went with the "PlayStation Vue". Purchased 1 Roku device for home since my Samsung smart tv did not have the Playstation Vue app in their app store. Ended up canceling our cable services and bumped up our internet service to 250 mbs. So far very happy with the service at home. As for the boat we purchased 2 tcl tv's (one for the salon and one for the bridge). I went with tcl because they are low on the price range and they support the playstation vue app. I will say that the service also works ex termly well on the boat provided you have decent internet coverage. I've used a VZ hotspot when wifi is not available and i find VZ works very well for the places we go that don't have wifi however as you can image you will chew through your data pretty quickly. I have a 40GB plan which my kids chewed through over the memorial day weekend because i forgot they were on it and they were streaming their youtube on their devices. Since its rare that we don't have access to wifi i think the 40gb plan is adequate as it also rolls over. So this summer we are planning on going to block island and mv and i know some places don't have wifi so we will have to ration out the data and possibly add a few gigs of data to the plan. Since my marina's wifi has been spotty and they don't seem to be in a rush to fix i invested in a wifi extender. I've been testing this out for about 2 weeks now and it works very well at boosting nearby wifi signals from our home marina as well as marinas we frequent. The down side to the playstation vue app is that it keeps track of your ip address and doesn't allow you to stream from two locations. I've had issues where it thought i was connecting from home while we were aboard the boat. I had to call them and had them reset my devices which kicked out any open sessions. I wish they had an app where i could just go in and see what was connected and allow me to manage my devices. So all in all i'm pretty happy with the setup and it seems to be working out as we planned. Well worth it for the few hours a day we watch tv while aboard.

Using directv now at home and boat. It streams on smart TVs, roku, Fire stick, Apple TV, etc. I like that it has both live tv and dvr. At the boat I use a Verizon hotspot as well or marina WiFi.

We just moved into a new house and went with Spectrum TV and internet. Cut the cord at the boat yesterday. Had Dish Network at the dock. Contract was up in August and price was going through the roof. Plan to stream and use the OTA channels for locals. The Glomex on the radar arch works remarkably well even under roof.

Any suggestions on which Verizon Jet Pak to potentially go with or what is going on with 5G?

Proudly still running Direct TV at home and with KVH on the boat. I'll ride that until satellite TV goes away.

We cut the cord over a year ago. Network stations via digital antenna and streaming via Netflix and Sling.

We have an I pad that is rarely used but still on our AT&T plan so I have it on the boat to use as a hot spot mainly to use for the Ring security camera I installed recently. I am in the process of deciding on which system to subscribe to for programming to replace Direct TV. We already have a net flicks account but are looking into YouTube TV for other programs we like as well as just individual subscriptions to favorite channels.

We’re cutting the cord at the end of the month we had Verizon install a gigabit internet only connection at the house bought 2 new TVs and 2 Apple TV 4ks June 30 th I’ll finally tell cable to bite me!, $300 per month and we only watch 4 channels no movies etc.
our problem is there are so many streaming services out there we’re not sure which is best for us.
She needs bravo and wherever the walking dead is.
I like discovery/ Nat geo.

That’s my problem at home.
Hard to find a streaming package that satisfies both of our needs for less than what I’m paying FIOS.
I’m still using DirectTV via KVH on the boat for now. Would be nice if I could have one account that would cover the DirectTV Satellite on the boat and DirectTV streaming at home but they don’t offer it.

I have been on PlayStation Vue for over a year and love it. It had most of the channels i wanted. The only major drawback was the lack of MSG. All firetv sticks in house and a tinypc for the boat. BTW it has nothing to do with the game console.

Another update: finding that pretty much all public WiFi sucks! Added a WiFi extender to boost our WiFi signal but finding all marina WiFi are horrible.also being a Comcast isp subscriber we connect to their public WiFi and that too is unusable. I think if you’re going this route on the boat you need to invest in a good hotspot and subscribe and mange your data accordingly.
