Apparently, boats anchor in the Delaware right outside the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ to listen to concerts. It sounds like it would be really fun and, at the same time, could also be a mad-house at night.

Anyone have an info/experience with this? Any local knowledge in the group?

Thanks in advance,

- Michael

I have not actually sat through a concert there out on the water, but have been on the hook there as well as inside. I can't imagine the sound would be very good, as there is a large building between the water and the sound system. The speakers face the wrong direction to get any decent sound on the water, I would think. Do not go into the boat basin there, they will chase you out asap. and it's kinda tight in there. But, there is a park right next to the Pavilion that also has concerts, albeit much smaller, and the sound from them is good on the water. But you can't see anything at either location.

I have stayed in the basin marina for concerts... well the boat stayed there and I went to the concert. But the people who stayed on the boat during the concert said they could "hear" it, but the sound was not very good. Last year, I saw a bunch of boats anchored right in front of the battle ship New Jersey as close as they could get to the concert. Looking at the chart (attached) that looks like a decent spot because it gets pretty shallow there allowing for close quarters anchoring without everyone putting out 200' of scope. I would guess there where about 25-30 boats there for the concert. And yes, of course, I'm talking about a Jimmy Buffet concert. My boat is called St Somewhere, after all. I can not speak to the sound quality there, but I would guess that it is only slightly better than in the basin. And I completely agree that navigating home at night, in the dark, would be sketchy. That facacta Delaware River is loaded with tree stumps, washing machines, picnic tables and dead bodies on a good day. I would not want to be out there at night.

Super helpful info, Converse48. Thanks. I'd stay in a slip overnight on the other side of the river so I wouldn't have any real commute. If I can find a way to do it without being in the middle of a bunch of bozos, I'll do it. But, the odds of that seem rather low.

Staying at the basin marina is not a bad way to see a concert there. It gets a bit zooish, but it's all good clean fun. It's a nice trip up from the Chesapeake. Time the currents to pick up a few extra knots.

I've been there for concerts both at anchor, pretty much directly in front of SS New Jersey, and docked at Wiggins Park Marina (the round boat basin). Sound kind of sucks both on the water and in the marina but, if it is a Buffett concert, you have live simulcast on Radio Margaritaville. Staying in the marina gives you the added advantage of getting a couple of prime parking spots for your visiting friends. As previously mentioned, boating on the Delaware River after dark can be a little of a white knuckle experience with all the floating crap, commercial traffic, and swift current.

Aquadancer,

This is super helpful, thank you.

Hi,

I know this is from a few years ago but did you ever end up trying this? I am debating doing this for a concert this weekend.

Thank you!

No experience with that venue but we do have a popular anchorage spot, Zach’s Bay, that directly adjoins an open air concert venue, Jones Beach Theatre.
I’ve anchored there for concerts a number of times over the years and the quality of the sound is hit and miss. If the wind is perfect you can get some decent sound but if it’s not you’ll just wind up with barely distinguishable noise.

Wiggins Park Marina used to be one of the marinas I was a slip member at. You really can't hear much when a concert is going on. At a buffet concert the marina is crowded!! hey usually book the slips out months in advance. During the Buffet concert I had the Harbor master unplug my boat so one of his friends could use the slip next to me because he needed additional power. He ruined $30 worth of steaks in my fridge and then got in my face yelling at me after I called him out on it. He pulled $20 out of his wallet and gave it to me in a huff. I never renewed there and haven't been back since. If you like to party, it can be a fun spot. You used to be able to dock at Dave and Buster's on the PA side and take the ferry over, however, I think DB shut those docks down and or they filled in with silt and haven't been dredged again.
