While cruising along the other day with my 280 with a single 496 MAG it lost speed/died all of a sudden.
No alarm no nothing

Looking back I'm not sure if the engine actually got in "fail safe" mode with lower rpm or if it shut down completely since I quickly shut off the ignition as soon as I noticed the engine was slowing down.

When turning on the ignition again I noticed an alarm "lost engine comm" on the smartcraft. After a while and after switching of the batteries and everyrhing I tried starting the engine again and it started and everything seemed fine..

I've read lots about the lost comm-issue and it seems I should go through all engine connectors and clean them as a first step to stop it from happening again..

But I wonder if the lost engine comm alarm really can make the engine stop(/slow down) like mine did? Or if something else failed and the lost engine comm message was just a by-product. Has anyone here had the same thing happen to them? Thanks!

I had a similar issue on my 496 engine dieing with no alarms. Restarted after it cooled but died as it warmed up. No codes. Turned out to be a bad crankshaft sensor. Replaced and all good.

My 496 kept shutting down unexplainably and without alarm. Bad cool fuel module.
Lost comms is a twist to the issue though. Maybe a bad main ground.

After intensive search on Google I've figured I should clean and lube all battery connectors and smartcraft plugs.. That's on the guess that the problem has something to do with the "lost engine com"

The crankshaft sensor seems to be unreliable after I googled that as well and seem to correspond to what happened to me when driving so I'll change that one just to be sure.

The cool fuel module is a bit more money so hopefully the above will help so I don't have to look into that as well :)

Thanks for the input! I'll add more when I get to test drive the boat again. If anyone else recognize my problems please let me know!
