Currently have a 75 Wellcraft Airslot 185 w/ 130 Johnson. Looking at a 78 220SRV Overnighter hardtop. 350 Chevy Mercruiser. Looks in pretty good shape..."needing some TLC" Going to look at it later today....never had a stern drive before...looking for the sage advice and opinions from those that have been there/ done that? Thank you all in advance...Mike

Sea Ray built a hull with a rock solid shell. At 40 years old though, you should expect to find hidden problems that will not be easily identifiable with a simple inspection. If you are capable of doing upgrades and repairs yourself, then they are a great platform to work with.
The pre-alpha outdrives of that era, were pretty much at their limit with a 350. You can't just drop in a newer 5.7 (larger flywheel) when the original one fails if that was in the plan. If it is the original drive, 40 years is a long time for it to be running at it's limit. Upgrading to a newer Mercruiser engine/drive package is quite simple if you can get one for a reasonable price and have the resources to do the repower. Lots of guys adding pods with o/b's and giving them up for a reasonable price.
If the price is right and you are handy with repairs, then you won't be disappointed.

It has already been upfitted with a Mercruiser 350/260 and outdrive. The outdrive is being service as we speak. Engine needs normal tune up stuff...all wood needs a refinish and it really needs deep cleaning from bow to stern. All the upholstery is a older rehab, but intact...
