I looking to upgrade my original Raymarine C-120 MFD to Raymarine Axiom 12 Pro w/sounder/radar. Raymarine tech support has said yes! I can keep my ST7001 autopilot and transducer. My problem is I still have concerns...My question is: Has anyone successfully upgraded to Raymarine Axioms while keeping a functional ST7001 autopilot?

I will only upgrade and stay with Raymarine if I can save by keeping some original components;auto pilot, transducer, navigator etc. Otherwise, If I need a whole system I most likely will switch over to Garmin 8612 MFD's and other components.
All thought are welcome

I have 2 Raymarine Axiom's, and they work with my ST7001.

I recommend that you call Jim at BOE Marine. He is the owner of this site and he and his guys are experts and have discounted prices for CSR sponsors.

I just had two Axiom Hybrid Touch Pro screens installed and had to replace my autopilot head unit and computer as it would not talk to the new system and I mine was a 2007 model Auto Pilot. I had to add two transducers to ensure that I could use the 3D sonar and mapping features. If you want those features your old transducer will not support the new mapping features on Axiom

Hmm. Sorry to hear the auto pilot did not work. I will be switching out to new transducers when I'm dry docked. In the meantime Im installing a converter so I can use existing transducer until I can install the new transducer with all the mapping 3D features.

Tom, Do you still have the specs/adapter cables/wiring diagrams you used to hook the autopilot into your new axiom system?

Sorry, but I do not. I had mine installed by Goren at Quality Marine Electronics, and do remember him adding or changing a transducer so that I could have the 3D bottom mapping rwvw mentioned. I am however still using the original auto pilot.

+1 on the Axioms! I have a dual MFD setup with Quantum Radar all networked and love it. BOE was great and worked out the details with me to use my installed Transducer.

The right question is does the existing Raymarine "course computer" interface with the new Axiom MFD's..... The ST head connects to the course computer via Seatalk 1 and the course computer connects to the MFD via Seatalk 1 or SeatalkNG depending upon model year. If your course computer interfaces to the MFD via SeatalkNG (like the SPX models) then you are good to go.

I upgraded my RL80 pathfinder stuff to Axiom and am in the process of adding a Quantum 2 Radar. I kept my ST7001 Type 100 course computer and it works just fine. The only issue is the controls for the autopilot do not appear on the new MFD, but you have full functionality of the autopilot, just some of the control must be done at the control head. In order to get the full functionality on the MFD you do have to upgrade the autopilot, but for me its not worth it. This is all a funtion of the Light House 3 firmware.

If you stick with the last generation a/c/e series MFD's the autopilot works just fine and all controls appear and function on the MFD. I had an a128 installed, but it can not support the Quantum 2 (Doppler) radar which was a must have for me. If you are good with the original quantum, the HD/ColorHD or the open arrays, you will be very happy with the 1 generation older MFD and save a bundle as well.

I'm pretty happy with what I have.

That’s good news. I too am fine using the ST7001 as a stand alone autopilot control unit to save costs. I will stay with the Axioms because I too am installing the very exciting Quantum 2 Doppler radar. Thank you!

I opened the dash panels and made a half a$$ diagram of my setup last winter but still couldn’t figure out why my C125 MFD’s don’t see my ST7001. Turns out there is a Seatalk Convertor in the mix but near as I can figure out it isn’t working.

Good news. I have successfully hooked up the axiom pro 12” and pre-existing autopilot ST-7001 by using the Seatalk 1 converter to Seatalk NG. For the time being I am using my existing transducer by using adapter cable # A80496. I also added the new Quantum 2 Doppler radar which is amazing!
If anyone is looking to upgrade their classic C-120 or E-120 the Axiom Pro is a good upgrade solution! Raymarine also makes an adapter plate to go from C-120-AxiomPro- no cutting!
