4.3 mercruiser w/ alpha I drive
I was riding today I have a 1992 200 4.3 mercruiser with a alpha drive. I was riding for approximately an hour when all of a sudden it’s like it went into neutral the prop will not spin just engine revs up neither forward nor reverse will work. I can shut the engine off put the control in forward it locks spinning the prop counter clock wise but clicks going clock wise and vice versa in reverse any opinions would helpful and appreciated

motor runs, prop doesent turn, shift into f it locks ccw.................

a few things, either you ran low on oil and melted the upper gears, check oil level and condition,

the engine coupler stripped from misalignment , can check by shifting into F and turning prop ccw and looking at the shaft from inside the boat prop turns and shaft turns=coupler bad

lower drive shaft is snapped , impeller will not turn and motor will overheat

The motor did get pretty warm I did notice that it was over 170 degrees

If the coupler was bad the prop would just free spin wouldn’t it? Because it has nothing to grab onto. I’m by no means a marine mechanic but I am mechanically inclined with cars trucks and heavy equipment

When my coupler went on my last boat due to misalignment it wasnt a clean break. It still had a bit of bite, and kept the prop from freewheeling and even appeared to work at idle. As soon as I throttled up it slipped. The rubber insert of the coupler broke free from the metal container and would wobble/slip. When I replaced it, I could not even tell it was bad - so i cut it in half to inspect. Not sure what type of coupler you have.

I’m not sure either. I just got the boat and the first time having it out and you’ve gotta pull the motor to change the coupler don’t you

If the coupler is bad the impeller for the water pump wouldn’t turn either causing it to get hot correct?

This is it correct

Ok Bc it was getting hot but prop wasn’t turning at all when it’s off and in gear it locks

So after some checking the input shaft is spinning but the prop still isn’t and the gear oil in the out drive was low what are the chances the out drive is burnt up?

Sounds like it is a pretty good chance if you can shift the lower and the upper is free wheeling. If a '92, you could also have either the gen 1 or 2. You will need to get that figured out. The upper decides the ratio of the outdrive. You will have to match it to your engine and prop. If the upper gears have burnt up, there is also a good likelihood the lower is right behind it.

Well like I said earlier in the post I can put it in forward and reverse and the prop locks in opposite directions depending if forward or reverse but when engine is running it doesn’t even try to go into gear just revs up and I can see the coupler and input shaft turning while engine is running but prop isn’t and water pump isn’t working either not sure if the upper being burnt up would affect that or not but is there a possibility the gears could be busted in the upper? And do I figure out if I have a gen 1 or 2?

first firure out what wrong. shaft turns and prop dosent . melted upper gears from lack of oil broken lower vert driveshaft
If you have 2 nuts and bolts on each side , GEN II
If you have 2 nuts by the cav plate, 2 nuts under the cav plate you have a Alpha1

So alpha one is gen 1? Because it says alpha one on it and thanks I’ve been wondering about the ratio so most likely a broken shaft
