Here is some information regarding replacing those "push/pull knobs" that many of us have in our cabins. Like many, our boat has the gold-toned knobs and we thought it was high time we changed them to a brushed nickel color to better match the rest of the updates we've been doing. Below, the first section is from Hafele (manufacturer), the second section is from the local supplier near me where I ordered it and the third section is what I actually ordered (for 1/2" doors and two tambour doors). Be sure to check the thickness of your doors and compare it to the catalog pages. The last section is simply conveying some of the process I went through to replace them. Overall, very easy - you may or may not run into a little glitch like I did. I'm sure there's other sources for these pieces, but I like that I was able to get these from a local supplier/businessman (granted, he may not be not local to you). As a nice bonus, the pricing was fantastic - better than I've seen ANYWHERE else, to date. As of when I wrote this, I paid under $30 - including tax and shipping to my door.

I hope this helps and if it does and you would like to order some,
please let me know your zip code and I'll be glad to refer you to a
local Hafele dealer in your area that you can order from.

#229.01.677 Knob, plastic, nickel
#229.03.608 Rosette, plastic, nickel (1/2" door)
#229.03.626 Rosette, plastic, nickel (for tambour doors)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I knocked the old rosettes out from the backside with a screwdriver (against the rim of the rosette) and a few knocks with a hammer. As I installed the first of the new rosettes I noticed it was going in very tight and actually caused the knob to bind against the inside of the rosette. Upon closer inspection, I found the holes in the door were just a tad small and not perfectly round which was causing the rosette to deform very slightly as I pushed it into the hole. I noticed that Sea Ray had alleviated the problem by shaving the inside of the old rosette. I opted to just use a 1/4" drill bit (mounted in a drill with the drill on high) and sort of "shave" the inside of the door's hole (in the areas that appeared out-of-round) until the rosette fit snug, but not tight. Took about 15 minutes to do all 5 doors - no big deal. But, maybe you won't have that problem.

Dennis,

Thanks for the great information. Now i just need to get down to the boat and measure. We had one fall completely out this weekend. It was the one for the door covering the refrigerator. The mechanism wouldn't work, and we needed to get in to the fridge, so i pulled on the bottom of the door and it popped out.

Mike - check out the first catalog page. I didn't verify this, but I believe the first locking mechanicsim that is pictured is the correct one - or at least it looks like the new ones I purchased about a year ago. These newer mechanisms have a redesign since the older style had a small plastic piece inside that would foul things up. Usually, this starts out as being "iffy" as to whether or not it will lock. But eventually, it stops locking all together (or unlocking in your case).

Yeah, we have several that are iffy right now, and then the one that stopped completely. Hopefully the new design is better.

Thanks again.

Mike

Hi Dennis,

I just ordered all new brushed nickel myself from sea-rayparts.com myself and new brushed nickel plug covers. I see you used a hammer and screw driver to hit the rosettes from the backside to pop them out. Did you have to take the doors off the hinges to keep from tearing them off the hinges? Just curious I plan on changing mine out this weekend.

Thanks,

Michael

Mike; don't hit them out with a screwdriver,I found several of mine were glued in and wound up chipping the surface of the cabinet.Cut the rosettes with a hacksaw blade. Just a heads up,good luck

A hacksaw blade or Drexel tool then just collapse them and pull them out. Be careful on the ones in the head with mirror on them! I have replaced the ones in my heads but still need about 25 more to complete the entire boat. Don't bother with the plastic ones....they suck.

You don't need to tap very hard to get them out. Tap, don't hammer. If they don't seem to be budging (after tapping on several sides), then the advice above is good. Good control of the cutting device isn't super imperative since any small boo-boos you make (such as cutting too deeply) will be covered by the new rosette. But, no, you shouldn't need to take the doors off - I just braced the door against a knee/leg/whatever.

Another thing you can try is sticking a pliers into the hole, then open it and see if you can get enough grip on the interior surface of the rosette to spin it.

Alright guys, I finally chaned all the Hafele knobs and rosettes and even changed out the Vimar plug covers to brushed nickel as well. I found the best way to remove the rosette's was with a hammer plus a 3/4" socket. The socket fit perfectly into the hole and stuck out the back of the doors enough to hit with a hammer and they all popped out just fine. All I need to do now is find a way to replace the gold trim running the length of the cabinets both top and bottom. Anyone have any idea of what the trim piece is or where to buy it?

Nice idea. Glad I waited to do this until your post!! I'll have to bring along a socket and give it a try. I have a bag of brushed nickel knobs, rossettes, and new latches looking at me every weekend when I get down to the boat!!

Sorry to revive such an old thread. I did a search and could not find what I am looking for. We have a new to us 2000 340 Sundancer. As Lazy Daze did, we are going through and replacing all the gold knobs and trim. We have replaced the rossettes and knobs, but I can not find replacement parts for the gold trim on the edge of the tambour doors. Has anyone had any success with changing these out. Otherwise I was thinking of finding some brushed nickel color vinyl wrap. I would rather use metal or plastic replacement, but if all else fails I'll do the wrap. Any assistance is appreciated.

I'm with you. I just ordered everything to convert my 280 to brushed nickel, but still have to deal with the same leading edge of the tambour doors as well. My initial thought was to attempt to remove that leading edge and sand/prep/paint it to match, but if you found it somewhere I'm all ears.

I'll take all gold hardware you wish to part with. Especially wall switch covers.

I don't have any wall switch covers, and i believe I'll have to destroy the brass colored rosettes as it seems the best way to remove them is to slit them with a hacksaw blade. I know others have had success "punching" them out, but I don't want to risk damaging the veneer on the cabinets.

Hate to bring back an old thread but does anyone have any pics of the updates they've done with the hafele knobs. I just switched out all of my brass t mold last weekend and am tackling the knobs and rosettes next
