Official 380 Thread

Recovered my cockpit seat cushions in June 17, very good match however the grain was diminished compared to original. Can’t notice difference when installed. 5 cushions covered for under $700.
I used a local marine upholstery company. DBA Overboard Design in Buford, GA

New here...I have been lurking and reading all the great posts to learn everything I can.

I found the Michelin wiper blades from Costco bolt right in. $6 or 7 bucks for a pair...

We bought our particular boat as it had most or all of the features we wanted.

Here are some of the features on our 380 that we bought in 2016:

Ohlson Davit with a Walker Bay Rib and 20 HP Tohatsu

New replacement engines with now 70 Hours

Looks like the exhaust is the newer style so that is good

Full canvas that was fairly new and clear Isenglas

Icemaker in cockpit...not working right now...I think it needs new icemaker unit as freezer is cold.

Previous owners installed a nice Fusion Stereo with 3 zones...Master stateroom, Salon and Cockpit. It gets used a lot. There is a good subwoofer under the seats in the cockpit. I have no idea what came with these boats from Sea Ray. I love this set up.

They also replaced the TV in the salon with a flatscreen on the forward cabinet and there is also a flatscreen in the master. We have never used them but there is a Tracvision unit on the radar arch. I have to figure that out...

Here are some of the things we have done:

Replaced the Garmin 545 with a Garmin 840 that was on a blow out from Garmin's outlet store. The 545 will go on the tender.

Speaking of the tender, the hull has an issue where the transom separates from the stringer. It is a known problem. I opted for a new discounted boat with tubes from Walker Bay vs a new hull where I would use my 9 year old tubes. I have to pull the tender out and swap everything over. The old one still works as there is a bilge pump but we have to hang it on the davits all the time or it slowly fills.

The other thing we are going to do is bow and stern thrusters. We find that we can get the boat really close to perfect going into the slip about half way and then it just gets all wonky. Dunno if it is because of some prop wash when slowing the boat. or what. I am used to sailboats with keels and trawlers with deep long keels. I know there is lots of debate about the need for thrusters but for us, it is a quality of life decision. I have looked at the SideShift but I am not sure if I would take out the one on the bow with all of the logs in the water up here. Then there is SidePower, also external and of course tunnel style...gotta figure out which style and brand...

We had Corinthian make new carpets for the cockpit area and swim step. We also got the same but felt backed glue down carpet for the salon. We still need to get a carpet guy to install.

I really like the tile back plash posted up a few pages ago...I think we are going to do that soon too.

I have systematically replaced all of the bulbs with LEDs. We also have some LED strip lights that we are going to put in the galley under the cabinets to shine on the counter top and above the cabinets to provide some ambient lighting.

Previous owners installed some under water lights but we find them a little too Disco for us...

Still trying to find some cockpit lights...maybe strip LEDs but we do not want to see the source of the light. They will go on the radar arch.

That is what I know for now!

Cheers!

Recently started to consider getting a bow thruster and have seen some Lewmar TT185 models on sale. Anyone have experience with these and HP rating that would work with 380 dancer's.

it shows on Lewmar website 4HP would work fine but for alittle more money 5.4HP could be a better option.

Marina is doing 3 boats coming up and is giving a bit of a discount on install

Those HP's sound low. I have a Vetus 95, 24 Volt and it is 8HP (231 lbs of thrust). Moves the boat well and I wouldn't want any less personally but I boat in a high current river.

I had that exact model on my 2001 410DA, and it had more than enough thrust...even in a strong current or cross wind.

Tom did you have the 5.4HP or the 4HP, if this worked on the 410 should be a good fit for the 380.

Thanks Jamie

When I had mine installed the 185TT was 5.0 HP, and like I said it was more than enough.

That’s the same one I have and it works fantastically.
It’s been a while since I looked at them but from what I can remember I think the emphasis was on getting a 24 volt unit for the torque rather than focusing on the HP.

Agreed. My slip is 45 degrees to the current which is 5+ mph and I like having the power. But good to hear Tom's experience was good with less power.

Not sure if Tom had a 12 volt or 24 volt unit. I see that Lewmar makes the 185TT in both 12 volt or 24 volt.
Tom May have had less horsepower but had the torque of a 24 volt unit. Torque is more important.
I mainly researched the Vetus (never really looked at the Lewmar) at the time and the recommendations I got were unanimous for the 24 volt unit because of the size of my boat.
My preference for the Vetus was based solely on that it is the brand my preferred installer used and positive feedback from others I knew that had them, not on any negative reviews or info about another brand. I’m sure Lewmar is a great brand too. I see that lots of boats have them.
Another thing to consider is that Tom’s 410 was a diesel boat and the diesels themselves give you more authority in close quarters around the dock because of their torque causing a bit less Thruster use.
I looked at a number of 380’s when I was boat shopping, some had Bow Thrusters that were original to the boat. They all seemed to be Vetus (probably because Sea Ray got the deal in those years from them) I’m not sure what model they were but you could probably get feedback from some 380 owners here.

JVM225 is dead on as usual. I had the 24 volt Lewmar 185TT in my 410DA with 3126 CATS, and power on both bow and stern was never an issue. I don't remember exactly why I chose the Lewmar, but am pretty sure I could have thrown a dart and it wouldn't have made any difference.

I just had a conversation with a yard here in the Northwest about thrusters. Where does the tunnel go in the bow? Under the A/C unit or in the floor hatch in front of the berth?

Also, has anyone ever removed the fixed panel under the forward berth that covers the front edge of the water tank?

Thanks!

Mine went in the hatch just aft of the master berth and the water tank. They moved my fresh water pump which was there back a bit.

Mine is mounted under the floor hatch in the forward berth. The two 12 volt AGM batteries mounted in sequence (for 24 volts total) and a separate charger for them are mounted in the forward most floor hatch in the salon a short distance behind the Thruster and they picked up power for the charger from the outlet behind the forward berth TV.
Nice tight and neat installation with the batteries off to the side.
I have to make sure my “Starboard Systems” breaker is on to give power to to the charger.
If I remember correctly the 380’s I saw with the thrusters had them mounted in about the same location as mine is.
Not sure where the batteries were though as I think that the factory put the batteries for the thrusters back in the bilge with the others.
No problem with mounting them under the salon floor as long as you use AGM’s. Shorter cable runs are always better anyway.
You’d be amazed at how thick Sea Ray made the hulls on these boats. I saved the piece they cut out of mine.

Mine is installed exactly the same as JVM on my 380.

My thruster was mounted in the same location, however I had my AGM batteries and charger located in the ER on a custom made starboard shelf above the water heater. I did this for 2 reasons. 1) I didn't want to give up any storage space inside. 2) I wanted them in the ER just in case I ever wanted to mount a stern thruster. Also, I had my installer add a little flare on the forward edge to make certain the water flowed past the tunnel.

Awesome info guys. Thanks everyone.

I'll call tomorrow and get things rolling. if anyone has pics on installation would love to see them.

...I have systematically replaced all of the bulbs with LEDs...

Bruce SEA 993, what LED bulbs did you use to replace the cabin lamps? I am having trouble finding replacements that fit in the fixtures. I tried the flat ones with the pins on the back and the pins were too short to go into the base due to the lamp touching the reflector. I also tried the lamps that are shaped like the original G4 but they are too long and interfere with the glass lens of the fixture.

I really don't want to replace all 14 fixtures...

These worked for my cabin
