I haven't been to Port Jeff since I was a kid. I think there's an anchorage in the Cove area in the NE section of the harbor. Or are there only moorings there? We're thinking of heading there this weekend. Can someone let me know a good spot to drop the hook? We have kids and a dog, so someplace close to the beach is preferred.
Thanks!

There is to the right as you come in to the channel. You'll see it as most tend to anchoring towards the beach opposite the mooring field. I've never anchored over there but a few of us plan on anchoring there this weekend. I believe you've met a few from previous flotilla in shelter.

There is also the spot on the left as you enter the mouth before the "Cove" / Pit / Pirates cove where the old falling down pilings are. Don't get caught in the "Cove"/ pit with the dunes as its a large fine.

The two places at the ends of the arrows.

Hey Dean can I still post here or is my card revoked :)

Based on all you’ve endured with your 360 I think you’re a member for life! Lol!

Thanks for this info. So you can't anchor in the area of the map where it's labeled "The Cove?" I thought that's where the main anchorage was. Are there moorings in there? It looks like it from the arial shot on google maps.

No they made that "the cove" area moorings for the area residents with permits only. The constable patrols it all throughout the day. We got tossed a few years ago but it was before season so they weren't ticketing. I'd stay in the arrow areas with in reason, I'm sure it will be a good time and people all over the place.

Ya might just see a random Formula in the area.

Thanks Dean, your SOOO right!

This my home harbor. John and Holly have it right. Going to the NW section is likely a bit calmer. It also goes way west of the left arrow, into the entrance to Concience Bay. If you do, don't get too close to shore. When the tide runs out you would risk being aground. Pirates Cove can be quite a zoo on weekends anyway, and loud with the revving of engines bouncing off the sand hills.

FYI, the anchorage area in the NE area is north of the channel only. South of the channel is permitted moorings only. Beware the harbor master.

If you want to go into Port Jeff town it’s s bit of a ride by dinghy. About 2 miles. You can call the Port Jeff Launch on Ch 68 for service into town if you like. They go everywhere in the harbor and will also pick up and deliver food / supplies.

For the beach, 3 good areas. Look at the pic I’m attaching. For some exploring fun, dink west into concience bay. The tide rips and you can float on it if you have a pickup. Also the little islands are full of tasty mussels. We harvest a dinner or two each season.

Great write up Brad! Thanks for laying it out there and the map. Hey Brad if your dinking into town where is a good spot to beach or dock a dinghy at? I've heard conflicting reports on it.

I'm attaching a chart that shows dinghy locations.

Even for us locals the dinghy dock situation is unclear. I've heard rumor of a free town-operated dock, but I'm not sure it exists or where it is. There was a town-operated transient shower / laundry facility that operated years ago on the west side of the Port Jeff waterfront, was closed, then supposedly reopened. I've heard it's open, but am not sure of it. There may be a town dinghy dock in the area of the Brookhaven town dock but I'm just not sure.

I am sure of 2 spots to leave a dingy. One is at the Danford's dingy dock. They charge a fee (I don't recall what it is). It's good if you want to use a dock or are dressed up for dinner. To get there you go around the east side of Danfords docks, south toward the shoreline, then head west between the south dock and the shore.

The second spot is a beach right just south east off the tip of Danford's south dock. Head around the east side of Danfords docks and straight toward shore. You'll see the sea wall, the red community center behind, and a pier with a gazebo on the left. The beach is to the left of the gazebo. Pull up on the beach and set an anchor. There's a stairway up to the little park. You can wash the sand off your feet in the little spray pad area. "Town" will be to the right side. I use this beach area all the time when I take the kids over for ice cream, or to do a Dunkin run when we stay out overnight. Since this is a beach and you'll have to get wet, it's not ideal if the ladies and gentlemen are dressed for dinner.

Thanks Very much Brad!

I'll on Long Island tomorrow for work so I'll swing in and find out what Danford's is getting so we can post it. I might reach out to the harbor master if I have time to see if they have any idea on the other spots you marked.

Was by Danfords last weekend and they added a private ramp in the location where the dinghy dock used to be so not sure if they are moving it somewhere else this season. Would love to hear what you find out John. When ever we go we normally stay at the Port Jeff Yacht club (on a mooring) and they have their own dinghy dock but you have to be a guest.

Great post! Answered a number of questions I had prior to the weekend getaway!
Will be anchoring out on the west side

I’d say I’ll see you out there but we’re doing something else this weekend. It figures, my boat’s in the water AND it’s going to be a nice Memorial Day weekend.

Sounds like my luck!!

I didn't know you can't go into the cove anymore. Damn, times have changed. Lots of good memories there.
It’s been that way for a while. Too many moorings in there to anchor. You COULD pick up an empty mooring. But as a mooring owner myself it doesn’t make me happy to find someone using mine.

Was always curious, it doesn't seem that too many boats overnight in the cove. Seem to be mostly day boating and most clear out by sunset. Any reason why?

The moorings in the cove are generally owned by local Town of Brookhaven residents. They hangout for the day then go home. It’s kind of a “party” hang out. People that want to stay out (like myself) generally moor on the west side of the harbor. The west side had more of a mix of resident and non-resident moorings.

I stopped at town hall yesterday and had VERY limited time to do it and finally got an answer that "port jeff" has nothing to do with the shore line, I needed to go to Brook Haven town hall! So I bailed out and I'l try again. Sorry guys. I should have just called.
