Any special advice in replacing the fuel pump on a 1989 454 Mercrusier??

That is what we have. Buy OEM as it should last. I bought 2 non OEM and they did not last. It is run by a push rod. Push the push rod up with you finger or grab it with needle nose pliers and push it up and pack the area with wheel bearing grease. One person on this site recommended refrigerating it first. That sounded like good idea as it would be stiffer. I never did that and the push rod stayed in place.

Thank you for the info...I didn't know if there was something secret to doing it or just do it as you would a early model car....thanks again...Bob

One engine is easy to do the other is a bear as the fuel pump has 8" clearance to the fuel tank and is under the manifold. Hope your easy one failed. We carry a spare fuel pump now as we boat in areas they have to be ordered in. It is a job to do at a dock. I turn on the blower get everyone off the boat and have a fire extinguisher near by. I can how do it in 2 hours. Be sure to check for leaks after. Make sure the new one comes with a gasket. Do not use any Teflon tape on the piping because it could get into you carb

Thank you all very good advise...I'm lucky this time as it is the port engine and seems as though it will be pretty straight forward....Bob
