I am looking to upgrade my original electronics with the Garmin GPSMAP 942XS. Does anyone have any imput on this model? Also any recommendations on what thickness seaboard or other material to use for install. I know the original radar cut out is bigger than the new units.

I have a 942xs, absolutely love it. Intuitive, simple to use, nothing more than a couple of pushes away.

My boat had a circa 02' chart plotter in it - one that was notably taller than its width. Of course modern plotters are the opposite of that, so in order to cover the exposed opening at the top and bottom - I had an aluminum alloy "frame" fabricated. Accomplishes the task, in addition to providing extra frame strength. If I had to guess - I'd guess it's about .25" thick material.

Not sure why the pics posted 90 degrees off.....

Did you guys have any issues mounting the radar dome? The new Garmin radar dome seems like I need a spacer to raise it up other wise it sits on my canvas snap.

Thanks Cliff, it looks great. I ended up buying 3/8 thick but how is the 1/4 inch? is 1/4 plenty?

yes, 1/4" is plenty thick enough for this purpose....

As for the material. It's OK to use seaboard and stuff, but if you really want it to look factory make a template and send it to Technografic. They matched the pattern and finish perfect! Or just get a bigger GPS. That's what I did..lol
