Official 400EC thread

Greg,
I don't think I took any of the flywheel and damper plate on the motor, but here is what I have:

What you are considering could be doable. The tranny would need to come back about 6" or so to get the input shaft clear of the DP. You are going to have to lift the back end of the motor up pretty high to get the coupler clear of the prop shaft. The tranny is manageable in weight to get it out of the way so you can access the bolts (6 in total I believe) holding the DP to the flywheel. You might need to twist the tranny a bit (clockwise / counter-clockwise to get the splines aligned) when you are reinstalling it. (torque to 35 ft. lbs. when reinstalling) Don't forget, there is a flywheel housing bolt to the block behind the starter, so take the starter off too.

Good luck!

Harold

Thanks Harold. I might do this before I splash it that way I can just slide drive shaft back like I did last time I pulled engine. Thanks for note on starter mount! Yours looks good. You get it back in and running? I pulled carbs off this year and am rebuilding along with new water pumps. Summer is around the corner.

Thanks Greg. I still have more to do. Need to finish the one engine and start the second engine. I did not want to have to do this twice! While the motors are out, I am going to clean and paint the engine room bilge and change out all of the hoses that I would not be able to reach while the engines are in place (sanitation hoses and blower hoses). I am also going to replace the exhaust hoses from the motors to the transom as well.

Now I just need the time away from work to get it all done......Thankfully my bosses are boaters and they get it :)

Does anyone know the size of the rail that the arrow is pointing to? I want to mount my Magma Cabo grill on it and the mounts are based on the size of the rail 7/8"-1" or 1 1/8"- 1 1/4" or 1 1/2".

I believe it is about 1", maybe 7/8". Don't have the boat home so I can't measure it for you.
Be mindful, in that location any grease or splatter that gets away from the grill will end up on your rear bench seat vinyl.

Yep, I'm definitely concerned about that so I was looking at a mount that attaches to the rail and extends out from it.

I would be concerned about the amount of room under the rail (between the rail at the gelcoat). That mounting bracket looks hefty and then you have the bolt and metal bracket. I would at least want to know the distance from the bottom of the rail to the top of the nut holding that bracket on. I hope to get to my boat tomorrow if you're still needing dimensions.

I have the same concern. The rail is not very far off of the fiberglass finish, so the bracket maybe too big to fit. Also, even though it extends out, grease and dirt do tend to drift from the grills. You may still end up with soot getting on the seats.
I used the fishing rod holder mount for the small round Magma grill (in the same place as in Titan's picture) until I got the rear canvas then I moved the grill to a pedestal I installed on the lower swim platform. (I believe there are pictures of it I posted somewhere in this thread)

Update:
I took a minute and looked for my pictures of the BBQ grill but could not find them in this thread, so these are what I had in my phone. (Can't get them oriented correctly) The first picture on the left side (lower) you can see the grill on the pedestal on the platform.

This picture shows the mount on the platform with the pole and grill removed (the silver circle in the corner of the picture):

Looks like it requires 2 5/16" from the centerline of the rail to the fiberglass. If I remember right that rail is pretty low profile. TitanTn if you get a chance to measure I would love to know if it's an option. I don't anticipate grilling more than 3-4 times a summer so I think I'm okay. I do like the pedestal mount, I'm just not sure I want to add one to my platform.

Does anyone have an oil change pump fixed mounted in their boat (Reverso or Groco)? I am adding one during my repower and cannot visualize the best place to mount it, so I wanted to see what someone has, factory or DIY. Any pictures of the set up would also be appreciated. Thanks.

I used to have a 1997 400EC. I have about 10 feet of the white plastic rub rail that I bought for it that I never used. I am in Harrison Township Michigan if anyone is interested.

Bad news from the mechanic. Looks like starboard engine has one cylinder with no compression. Looks like a new engine may be in my future. Any words of wisdom from those that have been there?

In it right now so I feel your pain. If you have the 7.4 Mercs, there are only a few options:

1. New motors are hard to come by as GM does not make the 7.4 block any longer. There is one place somewhere in the south that has new complete engines. If I remember correctly, they offer them at $11,150 each. (Can't remember name of place or their website) (Not who I looked at before, but will give you the idea: https://www.atlanticmarinestore.com/new-7-4l-complete-inboard-engine-package/);
2. Get a remanufactured long block and swap your good parts onto the "new" block (which is what I am doing now); or
3. Replace both motors with 8.1s (which I understand will bolt up to the trannys), but GM does not make the 8.1s anymore either so parts may start getting hard to locate.

Good luck.
I have pictures posted in this thread of my progress so far.

Definitely an expensive bummer Eluther. I lost an engine, this time last year. My mechanic went with a re-manufactured block from a local source. So far so good, but it took more than 2 months to get back on the water.

Great pics. Are you doing all the work yourself?

My wife wants to start redoing the mid cabin. Any of you have a good how-to about how that comes apart?

I mounted my grill in a fishing pole holder near the transom door. It hangs off the back end sufficiently and no grease drips in the interior of the boat. Nice location near the sink to place items and tools to cook.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the panel in the saloon behind the settee? Mine has a large mirror in the middle and I want to get access to the speakers behind the panel

My winter project installed. Next step is to replace the carpet.
