How come when I put my muffs on my lower unit then turn the water on. Water doesn’t circulate through the engine until I start it. I would think the water pressure would force water through the engine.

The pump is what moves the water and while probably not water tight the impeller blocks the flow.

Crazy Maggie, as was said above, there are no dumb questions, except for some of them I've asked. You're pretty safe asking any question here on CSR. You won't likely be flamed for asking. That's one of the great things about this site, except that you have to put up with the likes of me.

Agreed.....not dumb. Only dumb question is an unasked one. When I bought my first large boat I went into the marina surrounded by quite a few older seasoned skippers. I swallowed my pride and immediately admitted I knew very little about boating and virtually nothing about boating the Great Lakes. They snickered for a second then took me under their wing and taught me all I needed to know. Since then I have seen new or newer boaters come into the marina with all of their self pride intact and watched as the older skippers turned their backs to them as the new boat owner displayed arrogance. Humility and ask ANY question is the order of the day. In the long run it will pay off and keep you and your family safe... (while this comment may or may not apply to you, it certainly is good advice for any new boat owner).

And if you do see a good amount of water flowing out of the exhaust with the engine off, that’s a sign that one or more of your impeller vanes is damaged/torn/missing.
