Greetings: I have been reading some of the entries here and I'm getting more confused! I have 2 Garmin's, the echomap 94s (great unit with Sonar) and the echomap 93s and a Standard Horizon 2200 VHF and I would like to connect these units to read the AIS from the radio to the chartplotter(s). I noticed the chartplotters have the black(-) and red(+) for power and 2 tiny wires for the connection to the VHF but which colors go to each unit? Is is best to wire thru a bus bar or solder the wires together? I see all this stuff for NEMA 0183, Is that something I need? I'm just an old guy trying to learn! Help me. Thanks.........

MT, sorry to inform you of this, but you can't get there from here.

Just kidding. I know less than nothing about electricity (other than it kicks you when you get shocked) and even less about hooking up electronics.

I just wanted to welcome you to CSR. o_O

Thanks for the welcome. I'm new so correct me if I go off the 'wave' somewhere. Nice to meet you...

Those Garmin units will communicate with the radio using the NEMA 0183 protocols. You will need to go to the Garmin website and get specific instructions for your units as to what wires will be used and how to connect them. I have my Garmin 3210's connected to my VHF for DSC calling. I had to use the NEMA bus but I don't know which wires I used. I believe it's only like two wires needed. Sorry this wasn't more help. BTW welcome aboard from another 80's 300 owner!

Following. I have older Garmin units with the NEMA 0183 as well. I gave up trying to connect my standard horizon VHF to the system to display the AIS display & DSC calling. I hooked it up as per the manual with no success. Maybe I can pick something up from this thread.
