Just curious, can this be used effectively on a cruiser in fresh water? Were would you attach it?

It can't hurt, especially if you have outdrives with SS propellers. Inboards, probably not going to help much. You must connect it to the bonding system for it to work though.

I kinda figured that, just wondered why the PO had one mixed in with all new anodes......

We have a guy in our marina that hangs these off his boat. I don't have the heart to tell him it's not doing any good clipped to his unbonded cleat. LOL

I use two of them one for each engine/drive. I connect them to a stud on the back of the engine blocks. I get much better zinc wear using these. I'm in salt water and a few years ago we had a guy with a ground/bonding issue who was heating the water between his boat and end of the dock. Thee of us, all in a row, had extreme zinc wear. A friends 32 Luhrs burned thru a set of zincs in 6 weeks! We all started using guppies after that and they took the brunt of the wear. The offending boat is now no longer in the marina but I still use the guppies.

So, my question is, once attached to the stud, where is it laying ?

I hand them off the stern attached to the stern cleat. You want them submerged at least as deep as your drives.
