So what type of portable ice maker are we talking about?

Interesting..... What's the specs on this? how long before cubes are made? Price? Questions, questions, right? (LOL). Mainly asking because this seems like a good alternative. I know some boaters that would benefit having a unit like this. Thanks!

Fast at the draw, just goggled it. How has your experience been with this machine?

I had one like that and wasn't impressed. Each batch took about 12 minutes and then dumped in to the unrefrigerated holding bin, where if you didn't use them immediately they would melt. I bought it to use on my previous boat but sold it after 1-2 uses.

I bought one and intended to use it on the boat. Once I tried it out though, it stays in the garage. It would be good for drinks for a couple of people, does not produce enough for cooler ice.

I had one for about 5 years before it stopped. No problems. You aren't producing ice for a party though.

I've used them on my boats for several years. I've found that they work well. Mine starts producing ice in approximately 7 minutes. These machines are not freezers. They constantly recycle the water and produce ice. You do need to clean them regularly.

I have one and have only used it a few times in the 3-4 years we've had it.

What everyone has said, it works OK but doesn't produce a lot of ice. There's enough for 3-4 people but not enough for a party, and like was said, if you don't use the ice it melts and the water goes back into the water hopper.

One downside is they take up a lot of room on the counter.

Look on the photos of Endless Seas boat in the classified section 450 . See what he did with a compartment that slid out holding an ice maker for beverages. It was fantastic and worked great!
Hope this helps,
Tommy

i can see where one of the small ice machines would make sense for drinks if you did not have bag ice in a cooler....we almost always have at least one bag of ice on board for food and drink storage so we just use this ice for drinks also....

Bought one last season. It sits next to my round table cooler. Works great. but on hot days will not keep up with the cooler. have to buy a bag of ice to start out the cooler. and then you can maintain it with whats made. its a great thing to have. And now that i have it. wont be without it.

another thought is if i am going to have to bring fresh water on board each time i am on the boat to feed the ice maker and also have to clean the ice maker after each trip to the boat i might as well just bring a bag or two of ice instead....just as easy to bring on board as water containers and no clean-up is required...

this is just my situation and just my thoughts...i do like the idea of the small ice makers but i need to convince myself they are worth the expense and effort to maintain before i purchase one....as mentioned it seems like the ice maker may struggle to make sufficient ice during the brutal summer heat in the SE if the unit was not kept in the AC controlled cabin....going up and down the cabin steps every time i needed ice is not as convenient as having ice in a cooler in the cockpit...

I read of all of the issues people have with the taste of their on board water. We have never experienced that in our 260DA nor in our 44DB. I do nothing at all special. Sometimes it gets ignored for a month or two, but always tastes fine. I do run it through an in-line filter when filling the tank. At times we buy bottled water just for convenience, but always use the onboard water for coffee and the ice maker and no one has ever complained. I guess we are just lucky.

Same for us Bennett. We have an onboard filter in the system which we change every 6 months and I use an in-line filter to fill like you do.
