Purchased my first Sea Ray last fall. I was told that engine had been replaced but I have my doubts. How can I know for sure if it was replaced? Boat is super clean, engine compartment looks undisturbed & engine looks practically brand new.

If it really makes a difference you can probably call Sea Ray and verify the serials from the engines and stern drives initially installed. Also, while its probably obvious, don't go by the serials on the engine covers because the covers could have been swapped.

Regardless at this point it is your engine now. Is there a specific problem that you are having or information that you need?

No problems. Just would like to know for sure, if it wasn't replaced I'm sure its due some maintenance.

SeaRay could verify the engine that was installed when new. Also there will be some telltale signs like paint missing from bolts etc unless it was a brand new complete motor dropped in. Another way is to get the hours off the ECM and see if they match up with the guage.

Waiting on a reply from Sea Ray. No paint missing or disturbed on engine, would of had to be a total drop in I would think. I didn't think about the ECM, THANKS!

Those serial numbers are older serial numbers. They are the original serial numbers and the boat was originally registered in GA. This does not mean, though, that the engine was/was not replaced. Where did you get the serial numbers from? There is a small metal tag on the aft, stbd corner of the engine - above the starter. Look for that. Of course, someone could have transferred the tag to the new engine - so this is not an exact science.

They did come from the tag on the block near the starter.

Who stated that the engine was replaced? If it was there is usually some type of documentation to back it up.

Long story, but previous owner said it was replaced before he purchased it. I found that owner & he said that was a lie.

Still does not mean the engine was not removed and put back. It may have just been the seller did not want to own up to blowing the engine and having to rebuild it - therefore trying to pass the blame off on someone else. The engine may have just recently been rebuilt/re-manufactured using the same block. This may be the reason the engine looks clean.

All engines require maintenance whether its new or not. If you have no records of past maintenance performed I would assume that it needs all periodic maintenance done. That means all fluids changed, thermostat inspected, engine tuned, water pump in the outdrive replaced, all bellows inspected and replaced if needed, gimbal bearing inspected, etc. If it were me, I would have all of that done just so I had peace of mind knowing what has been done and I would now have a new baseline for moving forward on future maintenance....and keep records so the next owner knows.

I agree, I have already started to do most of all that.

Starting to look like the engine was not replaced. And, if it was pulled out and any other major work done you would see the paint missing from bolts (around intake, thermostat housing, circulating pump etc), scratches on the lift rings and mounts, tie wraps that don't match or are missing, the little rubber ends that come on the hose clamps. Multiple hose clamp marks on hoses. There is always some evidence the motor was removed or worked on - no matter who did it or how good they are.

One thing I would do for peace of mind given the story you have is have the hours pulled from the ECM - will need to pay a Merc mechanic that has the scan tools to do it and see if they are in line with the hour meter. Otherwise if the motor is running fine, do your maintenance to set a baseline and go boating!
