Ok. Back on track.
Finished it last night and it looks good. No wrinkles. Here it is sitting on top of the seat cushion just like it does on the boat.

Any suggestions on how to create these vertical lines in the nickel vinyl on the upper panel?

Looks like they were pressed in with heated plates. I thought of French stitching individual panels together, or top stitching them together.

Although with top stitching, it makes one panel raised and the panel next to it depressed, like these test pieces.....

The center panel sits under the outer panels. Not bad for a 3 panel piece, but i have 4 panels.

A single straight stitch for each line through foam backed vinyl with a scrim (or some other thin material).

Personally you might just want to keep it plan. If not near the original no one would know.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll make a test piece with just the straight stitch and see how it looks.

What kind of machine are you using?

I bought this one. It has the monster wheel, does zig zag stitching and it has been working very well.

I haven’t used the zig zag feature but having the ability to adjust the needle left right and center has been beneficial with attaching the piping to the material.

I’ve never used a sewing machine before, and don’t know the first thing about them, but I’ve been looking to pick up a good used one to practice with. My kids 18’ bowrider is in serious need of new vinyl upholstery and I wanted to play around with it a bit. I also want to play around with their canvas too.

Come by my office and I can let you try mine. Worst case I wind up having to make it for you ;)

That one looks like a knock off (or generic version) if the Sailrite Ultrafeed. If built similarly it will handle a lot as my LSZ-1 is my main unit. I have a travel pack for it so I can go on site and a built in table for it. It just got me through making my cover for the 340SDA.

It’s nearly identical to the lsz-1.

The clutch disengages a little different, but otherwise very similar.

I’ve never sewn a stitch in my life before this project. I just started on some scrap pieces, watched the sailrite videos, and got some great advice from Kevin.

I may take you up on that when I uncover their little boat. They’ll both be home from school by mid May, so I’ll probably uncover it in April to start getting it ready for them.
If I find I can handle a cushion or two I’ll probably buy a machine like Espo’s off of eBay to do the rest.

Expos4. Nice work! Very inspiring to watch you work.

The eBay machines ones are $300 and from what I researched very similar or identical to sailrite version. However, sailrite seems to have worked out some QC issues and I was thinking about one of the SR machines just because they have added so much with the videos of how to do this stuff.

One really nice thing about Sailrite is the post-sales support. They have almost anything you need for a repair on their units. When I originally decided to purchase one I saw the lower cost ones on line and figured since it was a long term venture that I would stick where I can get support and parts quick.

Now down the road a little I am looking at some supplemental pieces of equipment on the used market. Mostly because they are not going to be fulltime or primary machines. Still looking at names that I know I can get parts for though.

Still working at it.

Here’s the most recent finished product: the curved backrest above the battery access.

I’ve got my eyes out for a suitable used one too. Really doesn’t pay for me to spend a bundle to just play around with for my kids little boat.
