So, why are tachs so unreliable....and what's the solution?

Of course, I replaced my dash last spring. I thought the digitals are 3 inches or so and the OEM's are 5. I have tried all the tricks to get the tachs to work the same, but to no avail so I think I'll replace them with the digital ones this spring and have my electronics mill me a bezel.

I opted for the Chetco digital route. The unit piggybacks off the analog gauges and sends that information out on a NEMA2000 network. I now have both the OEM gauges and data on my MFD/network. One other consideration was I didn’t like mixing the analog and digital, but that my own OCD issue as the guys that have installed them in the old housing make them look amazing.

With the Chetco unit, You can use the original tachs or replace with Aetna, it will work the same way. I opted for this because I wanted to add instrumentation to the transmissions. This has been a big project and requires some technical ability or ability to read a lot and learn.

For easy, Aetna are the way to go.

Well lucky me, I guess. My original factory tachs that are only supposed to last 4-5 years are now 18 years old and still right on the money. Of course now that I have posted this....

I would probably get the Aetna digital when mine fail, but man I really prefer the analog sweep hand look. Not sure I could stomach a couple of digital readouts in the instrument gauge cluster.
