Thinking of a few nights in Fire Island

Non residents are fine overnight, but you are talking the higher rate, and it is hard to find a spot on the weekend. You will also do some rocking and rolling with the winds......

I hear that there are plans to extend the west sea wall to calm things down when the west winds kick up.

That is what contributed to all the damage in the fall of 2017.

Been to Davis Park Very rough if the wind blows in the wrong direction very happening spot and the casino restaurant is amazing, Atlantique in my opinion is probably the quietest place they only have a tiny snack hut that is not open late the beach is beautiful and the marina is pretty good but it is quite a hike to Ocean Beach by foot For restaurants and nightlife . Watchhill Is the most protected basin there’s a lot to do during the day with the programs that they have for the kids etc. haven’t been there since the remodel but I do remember a decent tiki bar and restaurant and maybe a 10 minute walk to Davis Park to the casino restaurant I prefer to stay on the center docs and not the docs on the outsides along the shoreline where most of the mosquitoes hang out don’t let the mosquitoes scare you at Watchhill they’re pretty predictable usually between seven and nine just find yourself in a restaurant or in the boat for dinner once the sun dips down about a half hour later they subside which makes a great time to take a walk on the beach with the Seabreeze no mosquitoes and pretty amazing stars meteors and satellites etc. when traveling to and from Ocean Beach or Davis Park for the restaurants from either Atlantique or Watchhill I find it better to walk along the beach then on the boardwalk pass because of the mosquitoes I made the mistake of turning on my cell phone light to see what was around us it was like something out of a horror show at night time on the boardwalk path’s there’s a lot of mangrove surrounding and overhanging so they are everywhere but on the beach not an issue as Long as you don’t mind walking a mile or so on the beach I didn’t find it an issue I have a long stride but my 5’2 wife it was definitely a work out we walk along the water‘s edge on the hard sand . The water taxis do you get pricey so we prefer to walk with a family of four and $10 per person each way can get very expensive just to go out for dinner ,just a few tips from the years of experience going to fire Island

Ocean beach is a 1/2 mile walk from Atlantique & Fair Harbor is only 1/4 mile & has a nice little Restaurant, LeDock or something like that. Great food!

Todd, I'm not sure you're right on the 1/2 mile but even if you are Atlantique is a 45 minute walk to Ocean Beach, a 2 minute dinghy ride and $20 to dock or a 5 minute and $8 per person water taxi ride. We don't walk to OB (especially on the way back for obvious reasons).

I think I'm gonna give Seaview a try... See if i can book something way in advance or something in that area... How is the water coming into Fire Island from the ocean? Channel well marked? Deep water? I looked it up on my Gamin and it looks like the Channel is all over the place....
I just ran aground this winter ( December ) with my small fishing boat, 23' walk around single outboard DEAD center of the well mark channel. I also sore several other boats run aground. I have also been through the channel with my big boat in the summer ( July ) with no problems

A lot of Fire Island is fairly walkable.
Water Taxis can get pricey, but if you’re reasonably able to do a little casual strolling, you don’t always need them to get everywhere if you map it out.
Prices in general there are more Manhattan than Long Island, but they’ve got a short season to make it and it’s worth it for the good time, sunsets on the bay and the beaches.

You are correct Brian. It is just under one mile walking, not as the crow flies.

Does each one of those dots represent a mosquito bite on the midway trail? ;) (just poking a little fun) I would stay on the shoreline and have done so many times. I must say it always feels like a longer walk back though.

Would u guys say its just a day trip??? Thinking of going on Sat and leaving on a Sunday... Maybe grab a early lunch walk around town, Grab dinner maybe a few drinks and then in for the night... We are not too much of beach people.. We like window shopping and just hanging around town or the docks.... We could do longer, we usually leave the longer trips for more out East where we are spending 4 to 5 days... Trying for Block Island this year too which is on my Bucket list.....

If your not into the beach scene then I think you could cover Ocean Beach in a day with ease.

Any recommendations for fuel (gas) in Fire Island?

Nothing down on Fire Island that I can think of off hand. If your coming in the Fire Island inlet the fuel dock at the Captree Boat basic may be the most convenient one. There are a couple on the north side but I have not used them. I usually fuel up west of there on my way out.

Hi Kevin,
We loved it at Atlantique. There were ZERO mosquitos when we were there. They must spray pretty good. Plus, we had 4 bars of 4G cell service too. I think there is a tower at Ocean Beach. We usually walk about 1/2 way on the beach then catch the concrete boardwalk. Walking back is great. We enjoy the ocean breeze & stars. Last time we were there we even caught a meteor shower! There were a bunch of people sitting on the beach. We sat for a while & watched the show. I have no issues with the walk.

We really like Atlantique too and the walk is not too bad and no complaints about mosquitoes. Everytime we went out there we would take one night for Ocean Beach. Only problem I have is that we're not welcome one the weekends since we're not residents.

Haven't been there the past couple of years but would like to go back this year.

Can be a nice overnight if you don’t mind the distance for a single overnight.
My wife isn’t a “hang out on the beach” person either.
For what you want to do, try to get as close to Ocean Beach as possible. That’s the main town and it has some shops to walk around and several choices for dinner.
Call Atlantique’s dockmaster to see if the policy has changed for non residents on the weekends. If not, give Seaview a try but make sure you call early in the season to block out a date.
If Seaview turns out to be a problem then use Sailor’s Haven and take the Water Taxi roundtrip. The cheaper dockage (less than Seaview) there will probably make up the cost of the Water Taxi.

The Town of Islip maintains a resident only policy on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day for the Atlantique Marina. For one night I would agree with the suggestion to try Seaview. Nice, protected marina and short walk to all that Ocean Beach has to offer. I haven’t been there since we bought this boat, as we hang out too far into the fairway, but last time I was there in 2014 it was $275 a night, including electric.

I was just thinking probably going through jones inlet as I will be coming from manasquan inlet and there will be more fuel options there. How is the inside route from JI to FI

The channel isn't bad. I've done that run from the Watch Hill area through Jones Inlet both ways & other than a few no wake zones it wasn't a problem. I also came in East Rockaway inlet once in some rough seas and made that run all the way home.

Jones Inlet to fire island is pretty simple. With a 320DA you don't need to worry about bridges. I would come in the inlet and head east you will go under two draw bridges and turn south towards Zach's bay.

If you're looking for a nice anchorage that's a pretty good spot to spend a little time. If there happens to be a concert at Jones Beach and the wind is favorable you can hear some of the music while hanging out.

From there you would enter the state boat channel going east. I usually head north at the Amity cut to the north side.

If you take this route it's a little longer but less slow spots where depending on the tide and weather the flys may be out.

I would try to fill up at Bergen Point heading east. They usually have the best prices and turn over the fuel fast so it's always fresh.

From there you have a nice deep channel going towards the Robert Moses bridge and east of it more deep water channels in the north side. Depending on your destination you will plot a track south. Once you get to the South side the water is a lot Skinner and you will need to pay attention to the markings and channels.

If you go to watch hill you will plot a course to the entrance channel and just make sure to stay inside if the well marked channel.

There are a bunch of us here that regularly boat in this area and we can offer a lot of local advice.
