The big old 80's 340 owners thread

Hello all,

Well I guess I have 7 footidis. Started out with a 1985 20’ Baja then moved up to a 1986 268 Sundancer , just sold that, now I’m ready to buy a 1988 340 EC upon successful sea trial in the spring. I’ve read all the posts on this thread and I have to ask, is there anything else to look out for with this boat? The wife and absolutely love the layout of this model and the current owner has constructive form of OCD with this boat (very clean and well kept) plus it’s within my budget.

Hello Nauti, I have a 1989 EC purchased on EBay in 2016 which needed major cosmetics in the cockpit area and new canvas but the mechanics are good. Had to replace the water heater but got very lucky. Had her hauled from Cape Cod to Daytona Beach just after Matthew. I have lived comfortably aboard her for three months at the beginning of this year and another month in November although I still haven’t sorted her cockpit upholstery and I need to figure out if I need to do major air conditioning work or just recharge it. It handles well. Does your year have the full v-berth or is it relatively easy to get in and out. The only thing I hate about my boat is the bed it’s a major pain in the neck to make the bed and because there is no easy way to roll out it without scutching down like an inchworm. I believe that the earlier 87 88s had the easier access bed.

Yes, it has the easier access along the sides of the v berth. The more I check this boat out, the more I love it.

FYI - Nauti and Razzle, yes, more access along the side. We looked at a 390EC with that setup prior to purchasing our 340 sundancer. If you're a fair sized person you'll really appreciate the full width berth when overnighting. I'm 6'1" and change at 260#, and I can use the extra mattress space!

Also, a great place for or "Gruesome Twosome" to chill out with a DVD for a while!

I owned an '89 340da for almost 5 years. We loved that big v-berth as I fit my 6'2" bod, the Admiral (considerably smaller) and 2 90 lb. Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

I can’t imagine two R ridge backs on a boat this small I used two have two dalmatians that we couldn’t keep inside our old Egg Harbour they were like a couple of spotted seals and great swimmers.

I wonder if your EC had a blue, wine or green interior. I have been contemplating removing the passenger double sided reclining seat. It takes up so much room and isn’t really in great shape with a seat similar to the helm seat there would be room for more comfortable seating facing aft and what with the expense of reupholstering we could put the money toward something more comfortable. This year we are going to sort out the cockpit and the Air. Sorry about the photos I don’t know how to edit them. I love this little ship. I am spending the next three months on her in Daytona Beach out of the cold dark winter in England.

Well Ridgebacks hate the water and wouldn't go in if they were on fire. They wanted to be as close to us as possible. Our 52' CPMY was a bit more conducive to their lifestyle.

Anyone using 4 blade props? If so, recommendations?
Late reply newbee if anyones looking 4 blades on 340 ec from experience rips the boat up on the plain fast but you lose top end speed as props are in half tunnels they cause drag and slow boat down 3 blades better 18x17 by memory with 7.4 engines gassers 340hp first pic is stock prop no2 pic is 4 blades used 3 pic are custom props made for my boat for 6.5 300hp hammer heads diesels rpm max 3600 blade area is larger props are stronger take torque these were made for economical cruise speeds 22knts = 28ltrs diesels consumption both engines

Man, What a weekend had a great cruise out and about for lunch, and didnt even make it out of the transient dock and had a temp alarm go off coasted back on a single engine these old gals dont like to turn on a single screw... has anyone else had to deal with the impeller housing and standing on your head to get to it... gotta lovem though....:smt089

If your on one engine put trim tabs opposite one up on down you will have more control off 340 that way had mine 25yrs

Anybody know where i can replace a wood teak trim rail on back seat on 340ec
It has cracked in half ? Its the the part that fits above backrest in two halfs ?

340 anchor locker my chain always jams below as locker is to shallow any ideas how to stop it happening ? Thought to use a cone so to spread chain around locker
Instead off it piling up to the roof ?

Teak is expensive and you have to remove the old piece anyway. I'd consider removing the teak plugs, unscrewing the old piece and maybe glue the 2 broken sections back together using some thickened epoxy and clamps. Prepare the repaired piece for finishing, reinstall, put in new teak plugs and refinish in place. After finishing apply new silicone around the base of the teak.
