I have a 2004 280 DA with a 6 speaker set up (4 in the cockpit, 2 in the cabin). The factory set up has the 4 cockpit speakers powered by a small standalone amp (130 watt I believe) while the cabin speakers are power by the Clarion head unit.

I replaced the 4 factory clarion cockpit speakers last season with JL audio MX 650s and was very happy with the sound quality improvement, however it is obvious that they are woefully underpowered. Hence my question. I plan to upgrade to the JL audio M400/4 amp, replacing the factory unit. Everything I read about the JL talks about it's small power consumption, but I'm curious if the experts here feel I would need to run new power and ground wires to the M400/4 rather than just using the existing wiring. I would much prefer to use the existing wiring, and "plug and play" the install. If context helps, we're not high volume listeners, but I would like to improve the clarity of the set-up in mid-volumes.

Any input/experience you've had on this would be very much appreciated.

Yes, unless the factory wiring meets the JL requirements which I doubt.

Agreed, you will likely need 6awg cable, maybe 4. Doubt that is what is in there.

Pretty good chance you’re gonna end up wanting a sub at some point which means that 400w amp will be too small. I’d run big enough wire now.

Yep, The 700/5 is a great amp with MX650's
and a 10IB3 sub. Nice sound and doesn't break the bank.

Everything I read about the JL talks about it's small power consumption,
This relative to watts output. IMO, I would not use anything less the 4ga for that amp driving 6 speakers, for a typical run from amp back to battery/switch. A short distance, like under 2ft, from a distribution trunk line to amp, 8ga min.

I need to replace my cockpit speakers. How do you take off the fabric covers? Are they snapped on?

Mine are velcroe.

When I did a big sound system upgrade on my previous boat, the whole thing was re-wired. Wiring (like the sound systems) has changed a lot since 04' - I'd re-wire for sure.
