Official 290 Sundancer Thread

Has anyone replaced the florescent lights in the galley with LEDs? Any tips or tricks to bypassing the ballast?

Thanks

Take the whole flouresent fixture out and replace it with either a 12volt or 120 volt fixture, as there is one of each in my 290. just did mine and added a extra 12 and 120 volt over the cook top. going the replace the 18" one over the table but need to order it. Got my 12volts ones online from superbrightleds.com online and the 120 volt ones got them at local electrical supply house. Take a volt meter to tell which is which or the 120 volt wiring is plastic coat with black, white and a green stranded wires while on mine the 12 volt was one blue and one white wire.

Just wanted to say hello.... Hope everyone is in the water by now. I have only been out a couple of times due to nasty weather here this spring.
If anyone is looking for a pristine single helm seat for a 2006-2007 290 let me know. I replaced mine with a double.

2006 290 Sundancer with twin 5.0 mpi's. I changed out both seawater pump impellers and then took the boat for a cruise. ran it up to about 3500 rpm and cruised around for a bit. Everything worked great. Came back into the harbor and Boom, lost my starboard engine and gauges abruptly. No stalling, just dead. Strange thing is it will beep with the engine start switch and crank but not fire. No power to the gauges on that side though as mentioned above.

5 minutes later the port engine starts to hesitate and then dies and will not fire back up. Fuel gauge reads over a half tank. still have power at the gauge and all accessories for the port side too.

I'm going to try and trouble shoot when i get home but i'm leaning towards the cool fuel 3 in the port engine being gummed up. seems to be electrical on the starboard engine. Why would the gauges for that motor go dead as well? Any ideas would be appreciated.

This is a new boat to me so i'm in the shakedown stage and it'g going really wll so far. haha. Thanks in advance.

Over the spring, I installed 3 SeaBlaze mini's to replace the under-transom lights. I simply wired the mini's into the old lights' cabling which worked like a charm.
Do you have any pics of the lights when the boat was out of the water. Did you use the same electrical connections?

New to the group. My wife purchased me our '07 290 back in February. We are up here in the PNW. The boat has twin 4.3's, very low hours and was kept in Lake Union (Fresh water) most of its life. We have used it a lot since purchase. Recently we went up to the San Juan / Orca's Islands and now it is on the hard getting some minor things identified during the survey fixed. It will be back in the water on Monday.

1999 290 Sundancer question:

Is the voltmeter on the panel showing total system voltage or just for the port starting battery? Woke up to find 8 volts this morning after added a LOT of water to a very dry battery (the solo port side battery).

Thanks,

Hi, all. Thought I'd add a mid-winter jolt to this thread. We just picked up a 2007 290 and cannot wait to get on the water. We are Lake Erie boaters out of the western basin. We are moving up from a Rinker 250 and looking forward to the extra size and amenities on this boat.

Any thoughts or advice as it pertains to this model? I know it was somewhat short lived in the Sea Ray lineup after the body style change. Only 3 or so years in production?

Kind of a cult following. I got mine about a year ago and use it all the time. Mine is in a marina, and I probably put over 100 hrs last year alone. Several trips to the San Juan, Orcas, Lopez islands in the PNW. I usually take mine to sea not to exceed 2 weeks if I can help it, keeps things moving, growth down, etc. I had my hull and outdrives bottom painted because it sits in saltwater. Love the layout, I think it has a better layout than the 280-310. I have the smallest engines available in the 4.3's but I can still get on plane in a snap with a crew of people and cruise realy well at 3600-3900 ~ 26-28 kts.

I like that hull color. Sharp. Ours is white.

How many people can you comfortably fit in the cockpit? I believe it’s rated for 10 but that seems a bit much. The performance you’re describing sounds great!

I'll never understand why this boat didn't sell better. I loved mine and I still think its a great looking model. I love the angular lines of the 310's, 330's. The large wide arch and the high flat bow. With a few small design changes this could have been my perfect boat. They should have extended the port bench to wrap around seating to the aft bench and used a dedicated real mattress. That couch/bed folding thing was a waste. The bed should have lifted up from the foot end to access AC and storage. I can't imagine anyone undoing a bed to make a couch out of it. I thought the 290 far exceeded what a 260 had to offer and I prefer its styling much more than the 280's which seemed to sell like hot cakes.

I am obviously biased, but I think the lines hold up well and that it looks pretty modern even compared to the current lineup. I agree about the cockpit seating and that was my only real concern before buying ours, but we don't usually load the boat with a ton of people. For us, the convertible sofa is sort of nice since we do mostly day boating. We spend our days at the marina/out on the hook and the cabin seating set up is perfect for our kids who want to watch a movie or something while we sit up top. We rarely overnight. Glad to hear you liked yours, though. I ended up between the 290 and the 310 and couldn't justify the significant cost increase of a 310 over a 290--at least not yet!

I also recently purchased a 2008 290 at end of last season. Will be doing a lot of upgrades and maintenance so will be sure to post everything here.

First up is stereo upgrade. Any suggestions where to put amp and 1 or 2 10" subs. Will probably disconnect the front two speakers, upgrade the ones in the lower arch and maybe even add two pointing down from the ceiling of the arch. Not a lot of location options. Would love to see some pics if available.

Also plan to change bellows before next season and purchase a mooring cover and take down the camper canvas during the summer.

Excited for next summer.

I also bought a 2008 290 last July and like it very much. Was always kept on a covered lift on a freshwater lake, had light use and was never slept on. Have performed general maintenance, detailed the boat and switched to all chain anchor rode. In process of fitting foam pad and linens to the bow berth. Replaced the analog TV with digital and am now thinking through how to create a “home theater” environment in the cabin with surround sound and streaming media. Also looking into upgrading VHF and GPS but need to make sure new equipment will interface with the SmartCraft VesselView.

What type of TV did you buy? Was it easy to upgrade? Have you done the stereo?

Installed a Hitachi model 22E30 which is 22” 1080p. It was not my first choice and I will get a bit larger smart tv in the future. Waiting until new bedding done so I know how much room I’ll have. Easy replacement as the existing tv mount lines up with the bolts on the back of the TV. It was difficult to find one with a larger screen and more features that also had the power and other cables jacks located on the side rather than the center (so they don’t hit the pole holding the TV mount). Have not done stereo yet (on the to do list) as the boat had the cockpit stereo upgrade option which sounds decent. Did plug in a Bluetooth transmitter to the iPod jack to stream music from my iPhone.

Does anyone have a factory rear sun pad for a 2006-2008 290 that you would like to sell?

I've been looking for one as well. Sea Ray no longer has them in stock and none of the wholesalers I have contacted has them either. I'd love to find one, though.
