Ive been thinking about cooking on board and definately want to add a grill at some point. I could buy a magma and throw it on there but got to thinking... I can get a stainless grill for a hundred bucks at lowes. Maybe I could make a king starboard shelf and mount it on the boat with a grill mount. Then I could also set a butane stove or a Coleman stove on there if I wanted.

Magma makes a bait table similar to what I'm referring but not sure if its heavy enough. There is a place near me that sells king starboard (and that stuff isnt cheap as I recall). I need to find out if it can stand up to grill temperatures

There is a small socket mount on my boat now, on the starboard side, from a previous owner but I'm thinking the fuel tank vents over there and having a grill 4 feet away from a fuel vent can't be a good idea.

Other than melting the table, any reason this wouldnt work?

We have always grilled on the swim platform or we had a mount to grill off the starboard side right aft of the radar arch. This was with a magna grill of course.

My little Magna doesn’t handle the winds well either.
When I get around to doing something different it will probably be a Weber grill that can be mounted to some sort of wood cutting board and use a “Grill A Mount” to attach it to the grab rail over the trunk so I can grill on the platform.
Leaning towards an electric grill next time so I can also use it at transient Marinas that prohibit the gas ones at the dock. We usually have the generator going at meal time on the hook anyway so electric is no big deal for us.

Funny, I am not fond of the Magmas and am on my 2nd one. Never had one to blow out. Takes longer to cook in the wind, but not had one ever blow out and we use it at least 3-4 times/month.

To your question about Starboard vs temps... Starboard is a brand name. You can get HDPE generically for less, by the way. But, either way, it's plastic. So in terms of can it handle grill temps, well, it's plastic. :)

@Dave - M - I did a similar setup with the Magma table and Weber Baby Q - here is a posting with pics:

That looks great. Thats really what i was talking about. Looks like there's no issue with heat

Are you referring to just "sitting on top of the HDPE"? Chances are it will be OK since heat rises. But there will be radiant heat and it will depend largely on the grill design. But make no bones about it - HDPE is NOT meant to resist any major heat. I'd be surprised if it was rated for continuous use any higher than about 200*. Google - you can easily find that out to be sure.

Yes, I am referring to just sitting on top. And I'm sure the lower the grill, the more risk of melting or scorching. Im not sure a coleman stove would work unless it was raised higher.

I have some experience where the coleman stove is concerned. I had a folding plastic patio table from lowes and put a coleman stove on top. I dont remember what I made but I well remember that the table was fubared. It survived only long enough to make it to the dumpster. It was a cheap table though

Pedestal mount with filet table fits the Weber Q perfectly. Bolted the grill through the rear legs using 1.5” bolts and wing nuts. No heat issues.

Afternoon winds around here are typically 15-20 mph. Gusts are often higher. My Magna can’t handle them.

Here's what I made to use on our 270SD

I have thought about adding the side table for BBQ'ng and found most options were a bunch of money... So, before I spend a bunch I thought I would try out a cheaper test model and see how much use I get out of it. I've got under $20 into this. The cutting board and the off-road light mounts holding it to my rail are both available on Amazon.
