340 SUNDANCER THREAD

No need to be a smart ass. I read your post multiple times before I responded. Perhaps you should read it again, to see how it actually reads? Perhaps it’s not the reader with the issue?

There’s another post above, Chief. I was just having some fun with you. Ease up.

...Most of the boats I see on the market need new full canvas and glass enclosures. The buyer of this boat gets a turn-key boat and doesn't have to spend $5-6k right away for new canvas...

The full factory canvas package including new valances plus a cockpit cover can be ordered for just under $3K (from the last time I ran a quote).

And wouldn't it be nice to buy a boat that you can use right away, without having to drop $10K+ cash into on Day 1?

Electronics is always up to the buyer but a new Raymarine Axiom and Quantum radar would probably run about 3.5K from BOE (less any discounts or incentives).

I wish I had known about you when I had my 340. I was quoted nearly $6k for canvas and that was reusing my existing support structure. Heap big money...

But as the seller wrote in his post, this is custom canvas. It isn't the cookie cutter Great Lakes canvas that you install yourself (or pay someone to do it or you. Ka-ching!). I had custom canvas and glass done on my 320 for about $4100 (professionally installed) I got upgraded canvas, zippers and glass, along with a few really nice custom enhancements. I was quoted about $3k by Great Lakes (with one of their seasonal discounts) for the standard OEM setup and several hundred more for someone local to install. But don't misunderstand, I'm not complaining. I love it and it doesn't look like every other Sea Ray out there. It's not fair to downplay this guy's upgrade just because you can get the stock OEM product for less. There's a reason it costs less. As they say, apples to apples!

You're right with your quote. But that $3500 only gets it a plotter and radar into the trunk of your car. Add a grand for installation of that setup.

And what about the engine monitors (this model year didn't have SmartCraft on the engines, so a simple Mercruiser Gateway isn't an option), the NMEA 2000 network components, the heading sensor for the radar, the updated transducer, the satellite radio and all of the audio components? And what about the labor to install all of these?

In the end, perhaps it's not quite $10k. Maybe I overstated to use round numbers. But if you seriously cost out all of these upgrades - including installation (something we often overlook) - I think you'll find it to be a lot closer to $10k than $3500.

Not trying to debate this I was just putting it into perspective to anyone reading that there are options in the 340 class of boat. I do all my own installs and yes I took those costs for granted. Additionally, electronics can add up very fast and could easily top 10K on their own and canvas on larger boats are considerably more - especially if custom - no argument from me.

BTW, for all of you that are upgrading to LED bulbs throughout, I thought I would share this. Every once and a while, I have come across, and I'm sure some of you will too, the "factory installed" lighting fixtures are wired "reverse polarity".
While incandescent bulbs will work either-way, LED's will not. So don't throw out those bulbs! If you look at the fixture, the black wire is probably going to the positive terminal of the bulb socket. THIS IS WRONG! The factory installers, I'm sure were taught to connect to colors and not positions and it worked when it was tested. However LED bulbs are polarity dependant. Simply remove the fixture, swap the black an white wires, making note to yourself that the "BLUE probably" wire will connect to the bulb housings positive connector. I have found three fixtures like this so far on my 2002 340. These fixtures are made by a 3rd party company, not Sea Ray.
Hope this helps someone.

I think 1/2 the fixtures are backwards in my 340. Luckily most you. Am flip the bulb... but the head/bathroom lights, and builder lights you can’t.... but they make smart LEDs now that work either way. So put those in since retiring the bolder lights would auck

you might want to re-think this....if the camper canvas is up you cannot use the grill because of the smoke...also the grill gets very hot and could damage materials close to it such as vinyl....this hot grill also presents a safety hazard by being located in the normal walkway for passengers....most grills will drop grease while cooking that somehow seems to miss the catch pan of the grill and lands on the deck....you will likely have to keep the grill clean 100% of the time when not in use or else it could stink up the cockpit, especially when the camper canvas is up.....usually I hear of boaters doing just the opposite...they convert their cockpit grill into a counter top....I have two friends that have done this....

Cliff,
I am having a camper enclosure custom canvas (similar to yours) made for my 2007 340DA. Is yours designed so you need to unzip the bimini from the radar arch to be able to lift your engine hatch? Kevin

Kevin,
Your 2007 model is different from my 2001 model...my engine hatch has no attachment to the canvas....

you may want to post your question in this this thread that is dedicated to your model.....

I don't think it will work too well as the 2007 entire transom lifts changing all the angles. If you go that route you will need to undo the camper to some extent. Depending on the design you might be able to open for a basic inspection but more than likely not the whole way. You probably would not need to take it down since the hardware will not move but definitely the aft curtain.

Hey any 2000-2002 340 owners.
Has anyone gained access to the fuel vents? I need to get to the starboard vent as I believe it is plugged.

Well my new fridge came in. Waiting on flooding to stop so I can get to my dock and will work to swap them out.

Main worry is getting them in and out the cabin with not hurting the boat.

I have a 2001 340DA and I'm having problems with the generator. It's producing ~80 volts when running. I've read that the capacitor could be bad and when I looked it up on westerbeke's site, there were 2 capacitors listed. Anyone know which one to use? The 2 part numbers listed are 035978 and 043035. Also can anyone confirm that the generator model is 4.5 BCGB?

Thanks!

There was 2 different gennnys available. One was the 4.5bgcte which was a carburetor model that runs at 3600rpm . The other is a fuel injection model which runs at 1800 rpm. I’m not sure what the model # is. I changed the cap in my 4.bgcte the part# that the dealer gave me was 035985. It worked after I changed it.

Swinging 18x22 3blades now... would love some more cruise speed. Even if I have to give up too end.

Anyone looking for a set of stock props? May have a deal lined up on some 4 blades.. and curious if I could recoup anything from stock 18X22 nibral 3 blades?

I left my old ones from my 340DA at the prop shop on consignment, and after three years he credited me $350 when they sold.
