Transmission Coolers and Transfer Pipe - Clean&Repair or Replace?

I pickled both of the coolers, and they both look serviceable, but I still cant get the hex plug out of the starboard side! Being that its original from 2001, I'm preemptively replacing it. The port cooler cleaned up nicely. Job completed in a 5"W x 15"L x 5"D plastic container from the Container Store

I'm going to paint these, and replace the hoses. This system should be good for a while.

Frank I dont think its anything not already here on CSR or the internet in general except specific part numbers and serial numbers, just someone pulled off what was most pertinent to them and put it in a form that is available away from an internet connection. I think this prudent if your going places not served by an internet connection.

However, you make a good point that it would be nice to put it up for everyone. Is there any way of uploading larger files? Might require some changes to the this website or hosting, and maybe a moderator approval for files over a certain size. There are lots of things too large to post up here that I've sent to others.

Anyway, it is my intention to add as much information useful as possible and I'm very appreciative to you and lots of others for what they have added to this site.

You could post a link to the content ? Here is an example this is the manual for 3116 & 3126

Hynespa made up a Emergency Radio Procedure for an Icom 400 BB that I customized to my boat and MMSI and added to my "book". It would be nice to have a library where these thing could live, and be used by current and future owners.

Right now, the only way is to email, and even then, most email servers have a 10 or 25 Mb limit... thats not a lot these days.

I think I have a quick fix for the transmission feed pipe damaged by the hatch ram mount.

I purchased a 1-1/2" stainless coupler from Home Depot for $6. I wrapped the pipe in some rubber material and tightened it up. I think that will protect the area and prevent catastrophic leak should the pipe rupture.

I ordered a sheet of nitril rubber to make the actual seal with.

How difficult was this to remove, and what fluids do you need to be aware of coming out of this? Water, Antifreeze?

This is the raw water side of the CAT 3126, so its all pipes and hoses, very easy to remove and replace. The CAT parts are extremely reasonably priced for the hose and elbows. This project was only water and ATF, no coolant.

The transmission coolers are easily removed as well. The are bolted/clamped on and have an elbow hose clamped on either end. The oil connections just screw off, and not a whole lot of ATF drips out. I disconnected the oil line first, and used electrical tape to secure a plastic baggy over the ends of the fittings. The hose/elbows came off next (a little raw water) and then I removed the coolers, by removing 4 bolts.

I only removed the coolers as the starboard has a frozen/stripped brass anode cap stuck in it. I'm replacing the starboard as it was original to the boat. The port one is only a couple years old, and I have a new one for the starboard on the way.

I'll paint the coolers and reinstall. Secondarily, I'm going to flush the rest of the system with Barnicle Buster to get the aftercoolers and main heat exchangers descaled.

Not hard, just the usual time consuming crap...hard to reach, and I never have the exact part/tool when I need it!

"Old" parts getting cleaned up and painted. CAT white is coming.

What kind of paint do you use?

I bought the CAT Brand. I was already ordering some other parts, so I had them throw a couple cans in the order. I think $10 a can, and they ended up shipping to me for free.
