Government Shutdown

Border is the most secure it’s been since the 70s. We don’t need much, if any additional security. The wall was to be paid for by Mexico, not the us tax payers. Stated over and over again.
The wall was a mnemonic trick to get trump to remember to talk about border security.
Immigration is mostly done by people over staying visas, getting here by plane.
Drugs come in through standard ports of entry.

Congress provided some 20billion in funding for border security this year, trump admin has only spent about 6%, spend the rest, then we can talk.

Senate passed budget extension to keep govt funded 100-0, no wall, prior to shutdown, Mitch refuses to allow a vote on it now that the dems are passing the exact same law to keep the govt open.

trump is trying to distract everyone from the multiple investigations into conspiracy, obstruction, etc.
He is not fit to be president, he watches tv, tweets, and doesn’t understand some pretty basic concepts. “Who knew healthcare was so hard?”
How do you negotiate with trump, pretty much everything is an actual lie, he even lies about stuff he has said before, ON TAPE!
Pretty much all of the people he hires, “the best people”, are gone, fired, under indictment, or felons.
Campaign Manager, Mannafort, Felon.
Flynn, national security advisor, agent of a foreign government, felon.
The list goes on, and on, and on.
Let him have his tantrum.

If you thought "Mexico paying for the wall" meant either sending the IRS or the military to get the money from Mexico was what was going to happen you were mistaken. Getting the money from recalculations of bad trade deals, the billions sent from this country to Mexico by illegals. That by my definition is Mexico paying for a wall...

oh, and why is he hiding all of his meetings and notes with Putin, not just from the public, and the government in general, but also hiding these communications from his own administration! That reeks!
Why will he not sit down under oath and answer Mueller’s questions? What is he hiding?
Why not release his tax returns? What us he hiding...

Aside from each of our political afflictions I happened upon a post this week that indicated the money being requested for the wall is equivalent to $5.00 out of a $44,000 budget. Since this was on the internet it must have at least an 18% chance of being true.

If even remotely close to accurate this seems to provide some context that you generally wouldn't get from the news stories about this topic. No matter your position on Trump I think both sides could agree that continuing a shutdown while we debate the $5 is just pure silliness.

Shoot...we spend $20Billion a year on NASA...

What sucks is the ignorance of the American people. If my memory is correct it has been nearly 20 years since a budget has been passed. The sheeple do not understand this is a fight over a "I'm late with my homework" and need an extension bill. They are called continuing resolutions.

If it were anyone other than Trump asking for the wall funding it would be granted. The wall idea has been approved by several congresses over the past ten years just not funded. All Trump wants is to have the money earmarked for the wall already to be spent on it now. It is clearly just sour grapes from the Dems that they lost the election and wont get over it. One of the reasons Trump was elected is his advocacy of a wall and Illegal Immigration mitigation. The government shut down is 100 percent at the hands of the Chuck and Nancy! As to why the Republicans didn't get it done while they had the majority... There are too many frauds masquerading as conservatives in the party.

So what is the acceptable number of illegals to let in this country via the southern border?

Also, what's the acceptable amount of drugs to be allowed to cross?

How about criminals?

We often hear progressives telling us we need "common sense gun control" because, if we could just save one life it would be worth it.

But how about all of the people, our citizens, who have died at the hands of illegals? Or have died from the drugs being smuggled in? Are they not worth it?

I don't agree with that one..Your sitting at home because The government doesn't have money to pay you...then your laid off... No different then my business and employees...let them claim unemployment compensation.... But certainly not a paid vacation

I'd say '0' should be the goal. They say they caught near 400,000 illegals crossing last year. I wonder if that number includes the new bodies they found. How do we know how many they didn't catch? How do we know how many criminals get in? How do we know what becomes of some of the kids or women that are brought in illegally?

They say 90 percent of heroin seized along the border, 88 percent of cocaine, 87 percent of methamphetamine, and 80 percent of fentanyl in the first 11 months of the 2018 fiscal year was caught trying to be smuggled in at legal crossing points. Those percentages are of the total that are intercepted. We truly don't know how much is being missed.

I'd think 10% of heroin, 12% of cocaine, 13% of meth, and 20% of fentanyl is worth stopping. More physical barriers where needed, of course. Why say we want secure borders but then refuse to allow the use of all tools to do it? What does Pelosi's current stance on walls say about the bi-partisan efforts of the last 15 years when about 700 miles of barrier were installed? Were the Dems racist and immoral then?

In a way the barriers/including walls are like a lighthouse, do we know how many ships a lighthouse has saved? Don't expect the cartels to offer that they were moving far more drugs than we thought between POE's and then compliment us on improved security.
 
I agree with your analysis @Woody.

We know that of the drugs we "caught" 80+ % were at legal crossing centers.

We have no idea how much drugs came across the border.

You cannot go from the first point and say - "therefore 80+ % of the drugs enter the US through legal crossing centers".
