Fox Marine Gateway

I do not have a straight view picture of the location. I have them mounted against the rear engine bulkhead (red circle below) next to where the cable tv wire hole is located. I used a hole saw and made another hole next to that hole and then ran the NMEA cable up to the bottom of the drawer and then starboard under the stairs to behind the AC/DC panels.

That's the insight I was looking for!!!

I know this is an old thread. However, I was wondering if your still using the Fox Marine stuff and if you have a long term up date.

Thanks for the reply Tim.

@Daleo56 Appreciate your write-up. I've thought about doing this for awhile, and am going to go ahead and pull the trigger and get this project done in the next two weeks while the weather's cooler.

For your power source, did you run it to a battery as depicted on their (Fox) diagram, or did you use a power source at the helm?

I'm assuming you mounted the power on/off switch at the helm.

Thanks again...

The power for the NMEA 2000 backbone is on a separate switch at the helm. As soon as I start the engines I turn on the switch (or turn it off and on) so the engines can notify the Fox devices.

Makes sense, thank you for your reply.

Just ordered my two Fox units for MEFI 4 engines, as well as the accompanying Garmin backbone kit and associated required items.

Hope to install this project towards the end of next week. Fingers crossed...

I was the original beta tester for the Fox Marine Gateway. It has been great to see fuel burn, and troubleshoot the engines without a RINDA on 1998/1999 engines. I have a combination Sea Talk ng and Device Net backbone. They all play well together. I use dedicated ST70's for my engine monitoring, but can display on my A95 chartplotter as well. Mine are MEFI-3

Great to know, and it sounds like everything is still working well. How long ago did you do yours?

I'll be running mine through a single chart plotter, a Garmin 942xs. Looking forward to getting accurate info and all of the detailed info via the app.

I installed the Fox Marine Gateways on my '99 370 Sundancer with Horizon 7.4L two years ago. I supply the data via the NMEA2000 to a Garmin 741 and have also used the Bluetooth App feature to monitor my Knock Sensor in real time. It would register for just a second or two but would latch the system alarm until that engine was shutdown. The ability to watch that alarm status in real time was the only way I know to nail down the issue. Swapped in a new sensor and haven't had it repeat. I also enter my fuel additions to the Garmin at the fuel dock and am consistently within a gallon or two when I fill the tanks the next time. I barely refer to my dash gauges anymore. It's a great feature I wouldn't be without if it was compatible with my engines.

Installed today, count me in as a huge fan of this Fox Marine set-up.

Worked with an avionics gent, we spoke with Allen at Fox and the boxes came pre-set and labled port/starboard for my non-slaved engine set-up. This was very helpful as there's different adjustments that have to be made for a given two engine system.

Avionics gent was very well versed, and the install was fairly quick, very clean, and produced the immediate desired results the first time the N2k backbone was powered. It all looked pretty straight forward, and it was even more straight forward than I had anticipated.

One of the units and associated gear laid out. Note - trust but verify. My Garmin N2k starter kit purchased from West Marine did NOT have a critical component in the package - the N2k power cable. That left me scrambling, on a Sunday - and of course West Marine didn't have any. Fortunately I was able to source a generic one at Bass Pro.

The box plugs neatly into the 10 pin harness used for diagnostics.

Mounted them on the fire wall forward of each motor

Powered the backbone through a simple switch, with power sourced independently for the system. Didn't want to have another hole cut in the boat, but having it as it's own independent system was worth it. Spent the extra buck having a switch with a light on it for ease of use.

End result is now having a full backbone in place, being able to get highly accurate information - I was surprised just how "off" the standard gauges were - and critically, using the Fox app a myriad of engine data is available in real-time. Almost like having a Rinda tool plugged in and on-demand. Quite impressive.

Didn't have time to sort out the wide variety of display options, there's almost to many....but look forward to playing with it next time at the boat.

Fly-n-family great writeup and thanks for sharing.

This is on my (long) list of future projects.

Awesome thread. Will be adding this to the 290

I'm working on a mod for the gateway that will make it even more useful. Allen and I are discussing the best way to do this.

I emailed the customer service for fox marine yesterday and still haven't heard back.
