I currently have a KVH M3ST Direct TV system which only receives SD TV and ATT says they may kill SD in 2019. I am thinking about converting the system to a M3DX version for Dish HD. It seems Dish changed their technology in 2016 and users needed to perform a software fix on order to at least receive the HD channels on the 119 satellite.

Does anyone still have a functioning M3DX? Did you have to perform the software change to keep it going? Does it provide meaningful HD programming?

From KVH themselves, Direct has been saying this for the past 8 years. They told me there was no real reason to believe it would happen next year. That being said we just upgraded to the new TV series which still only receives SD, but will be ready if the change does happen.

We have the KVH TV1 with Direct TV at home and on the boat. Thus our boat plan is just $7 per month for its receiver. Should Direct TV drop their support of the Ku band (which is what they broadcast SD channels, and is the only band the TV1-TV8 receives), then we will most likely completely cancel our Direct TV and go to internet TV at home (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc) and probably get a single receiver Dish Network plan for the boat. Unless KVH offers some rediculously cheap upgrade for its $10,000 HD antennas supporting the Ka band.

Many thanks for these replies. Like you both, I have Direct TV hardware (SD only) but I am spoiled and have to have HD. My understanding about the KVH TV1 is that it supports Dish Network HD programming at least to some extent and I am considering the KVH TV3 unit as a solution.

I am hoping to hear from a KVH M3DX owner using Dish Network. Might be a needle in a haystack but...

Technically, the TV series from KVH supports the Ku band only. Maybe call KVH or Dish and find out what channels Dish broadcasts on the Ku band.

The new KVH will pick up Dish also, and the HD channels. WE stayed with Direct because our local tech, who is also a friend, says there are more issues with Dish not working.

Regarding the KVH M3DX units, it seems like they will still pick up Dish satellite 119 but Dish has moved most if not all of their HD channels to either 61, 110, or 129. So, to get HD programming, it makes little sense for me to convert my M3ST to a DX. There are non satellite alternatives like the Glomex Webboat cellular/wifi unit or simply the phone or hotspot solutions.

I am in the same "boat" with an KVH M1 that has just become to pixelated to live with. I am so invested with multiple direct tv locations I would just hate to switch but just need something stable for the rare times we hunker down inside - football of course!! Watching this thread for ideas !!
