500/520 DB official thread

Who has put EGT monitors on their QSM-11's? I just got a quote for a HUGE job to do it since:

Unfortunately, heard back from our Cummins representative, and the port isn’t present on marine engines for an egt sender. We’d need to drill and tap a thread into the fitting. I don’t think we’ll be able to get access unless we removed the turbo, and that would take the project from 7 hours to 22hours to install the gauge on the boat. Let me know if you’re still interested in a formal estimate.

Thoughts? Mike

That's ridiculous. I bought the kit from SBMAR and installed them myself a few years ago. There is a pipe plug on the exhaust riser directly after the turbo. Remove that plug, add bushing and insert the EGT probe.

I just got the boat this fall and have only put 10-12hrs on it so I don’t have a lot of data to work off of. I am getting the props tuned and some pitch taken out of them to get the fuel burn down to Tony’s suggested numbers to avoid exhaust manifold leaks. New England propeller called me and said my props are Federal 28x31 props. One prop measures out close to 31.3” on all blades and the other has all 4 blades ranging from 30.7-31.6 so that prop probably hit something.

Right now I am burning approx 23.8gph @ 2000rpms and reach 2330rpm WOT. The engines are rated for 2300 WOT so I am getting to max rpms just fine. The prop shop can’t do any calcs and adjustments based on fuel burn, just target max RPMs. So my question i If you have 28” props what pitch are you at? Does this achieve the 20gph @ 2000rpms that they recommend? If so what is your max rpms? Without better data we are just guessing and planning on targeting 2400 WOT and that will be approx 30.3” of pitch which is taking out around 1” of pitch. I am hoping that gets me into the safe fuel burn range.
Any insight is appreciated. I have posted on Sbmar as well but no one could give me a good number as they don’t know the boat. I figured with some of you with the same boat I may have better luck getting a more educated guess.

Thanks
Jeremy.

I've taken 1" out and dropped 2 cups so far and now burn around 18 GPH at 1900 RPM. My boat never burned over 21 GPH even with the factory pitch though. There are so many variables, I've seen guys down to 29-30" pitch to achieve the same numbers that I see with the same boat. I'd start with 1" and go from there.

Also, I've heard that the computer limits RPM to 2360? so you may never see 2400.

That's good information, thank you. Also good to know that there is a rev limiter. When I say I am looking for 2400 rpms, that is the number I am going to give the prop shop so that they can have a goal to work towards.

I had my gaskets done when we purchased the boat and I can say that we trawl (800-900) rpms 90% of the time our port gasket (new and improved I was told) leaked after the first season. My buddy did 1 on his boat and is leaking again.
The previous owner had props made to improve fuel economy and the boat wouldnt get past 2100 rpms
So I made him install the stock props and she was fine.
SBMAR suggests running the rpms higher when cruising I think around 1950 if I remember
I believe the problem lies in the exhaust mainifolds warping no matter what gasket you install , we also had the manifolds machined for the repair.
I’d bet you’d be hard pressed to find a QSM11 that wasn’t leaking.
This is not a job I am going to have done every year or so

Totally agree, I have a leak on my port engine but keep putting it off because of the horror stories. Sounds like the repair only works about 10% of the time.

Run your hand behind the coolant tank usually in the area of the crossover pipe and you'll get soot. Or look up under the coolant tank back by the air filter and you'll see soot where the manifold bolts up.

One problem with our era Boats is the delaminates of the cabinet doors. As we know finding the material is unlikely so my buddy took his doors to have another solution done
I like this idea where you could pick a color or material to match your decor.
We have 1 door behind the sink that suffers from this.
Here’s our door and his larger doors after the repairs.
Where did you bring the doors to have new finishes done?
Approximately what did it cost

Gary the doors are a friend of mine I can ask him.i was also thinking of SS strips but mine are behind the sink and the wife seems to think no matter what we do they’ll show signs of rust so Formica it is .

Joe, I’m hoping that’s not me that was the po of your buddies boat.

Look in the mirror Brian who do you see? Yep that’s him
Remember he had the port motor done

We have the same issue with the cabinets behind the sink. The stainless would also look very good

Yeah, I know that Joe, that came up during the survey, but both engines also made 2360, if I recall, during the survey. I know Vinny still has the props on the boat that were on it when we transferred ownership and that he plans on installing the spares this winter (though it sounds like maybe he already did by your note above). Both sets were tuned exactly the same by B&S when I bought the boat so I'm surprised to hear he only got 2100 with the originals. The set that were his spares were my original running set, I had installed what were the spares when I got the boat back to NY after they were tuned and polished. I'm pretty sure he knows that history but I'll go over it with him next time I see him at the yard. Oh, btw, I cruised that boat at 2000 rpms, at about 72% load if I recall correctly.

Hey guys. I’m just a 460 guy but I was reading your thread and had a couple comments.

1. Check out restorationmarine.com. John has all the material for the laminate on the doors. A sample kit is 8 bucks and is worth it to be sure it matches.

2. I got much advice from Havana Shamrock when purchasing electronics and I also use the furuno TZTL12f mfd. mine still shows active captain and I’m pretty satisfied overall. I think the garmin interface is a little easier but the tech support and radar with Furuno absolutely amazing.

Ok back to my designated threads!

Josh

Sure! Should only have to bill you for say....21 hours.
I also have installed the dual gauge to monitor both engines' EGT. Pretty straight forward. hardest part was snaking wires up to the helm. Use port on riser after turbo. Had removed old Clarion round remote control from helm and replaced with gauge. Used dual gauge by ISSPRO.

No Brian you read it wrong or I spelled it out wrong I guess I was referring to my boat (po) and my demo ride.
