Maritimo, Replaces Sea Ray 40+

Those are great features, especially the straight drives. We’re looking for a step up in quality from Sea Ray, and I’m not sold on pods. We were big on Tiara based on their reputation, but now we’re kind of on the fence about them. We took a 44 Coupe out on a demo run. The masthead light was vibrating back and forth even in neutral at the slip, and with a 1-2 foot chop in the bay the hull was pounding and the head-level galley cabinet was shaking badly. The boat didn’t seem very solid.

We chartered a Tiara in Maine a couple of different summers (same boat both trips).

Felt it was very sea worthy, solid boat. Finish out was a bit plain. No problems with it, just not as trimmed and polished.

I think there are some folks on here with Tiara's who can give some real first hand opinions. I've always liked them, I just think they come from more of a fishing heritage and show that a bit more then a cruiser. Two things I always look at close when boat shopping is the weight and the deadrise when talking seakeeping and pounding. The heavier the boat the better the ride and the higher the deadrise the better the ride. Both of those statements are general, but I see boats like a Princess V58 weigh something like 50000 lbs and a Searay 60 weigh 62000 lbs and although one may be faster I always wonder what the ride is like...

All boats at some point have some part or piece that has vibration. My answer is just the same, fix it... And each and every boat, even the same model, is different. I have a 460 that weighs well over 30,000 lbs and some say that's impossible but it does... Been out in some tough weather and still wish I have 60,000lbs!

Find what you like, write down what is important to you then find as close of a fit as you can. There are no perfect boats... until you custom build one, then I just want to be your friend...

The problem dealers will have with Carver/Marquis is their history. Under prior management, the company stopped paying dealers for the warranty work they did. Carver management later filed bankruptcy and included the money owed their dealers in the liabilities. The dealers eventually got pennies on the dollar for their warranty claims costing the dealer network 100's of thousands of $$ to millions that they can never recover.

I know that this was under prior ownership and management, but most dealers were smaller privately owned and guys who have been successful in the boat business over a long period of time have equally long memories. I know Rob Parmentier and I know how dynamic and positive he can be, but this was/is a big pill for ex-Carver and Marquis dealers to swallow. I have no doubt that Rob will be successful, Unfortunately, I don't look for it to be with the previous dealer network.
Frank - you are spot on. My Chattanooga dealer said he was one of the largest unsecured creditors to the tune of nearly 7 figures and he will never sell another Carver boat.

Few Maritimo facts.

The ex-owner of Riviera, Bill Barry-Cotter sold Riviera and started up Maritimo.

As you know Maritimo chooses not to use pods and instead has designed the hull and boat to claim there boats are just as efficient as a podded boats.

In terms of sea keeping ability, a professional skipper delivers their boats between the Gold Coast in Aus to NZ.

Tiara's come from a fishing heritage but newer models are getting further into creature comforts.

Before that custom build is complete there will be several things that the customer will wish they had thought to put in, so even that will not be perfect. Perfect is a moving target.

But I still want to be their friend to help figure it out...

While I don't doubt he was upset, he wrote off the loss and recovered a significant portion I'm sure.

Doug - he told me he got pennies...and during those years, he probably couldn't write off much - but maybe with loss carryforwards...

Yeah no doubt it sucked to be on the receiving end. I guess what I'm trying to get across is that I think it's short sighted to say you'd never do business with X brand again... If he thinks that any other brand wouldn't do the same thing under a restructure, I'm fairly certain he's mistaken.... Aka corporate greed.

I agree with his sentiment against the brand name but it was not these people, as I understand, that screwed him, but I probably would feel the same.

As for the greed part, they were just playing by the rules we have in place for business, and they had no moral compass that made them do better than that.
