Wax/Buff Hull

A good polisher is always heavy, sadly...

I've switched to even heavier polishers. I'd say they weighed about 180 pounds each.

I couldn’t comment on your polishers, as I have never seen them but I did see a about 100 pound acid washer at one of the marinas in Grand haven when I was looking at boats. The Admiral did not let me look long. LOL

Is there a particular one you find that does the job better than the others?

I have never bought a “pint” of Bourbon... I only buy 750 mls and above formally known as a “fifth”. I have not seen Knob Creek, Jefferson’s anything, Single Barrel (Jack Daniels), 1792 or any of my standard fare offered in a pint.... just saying....

Google "pints of bourbon". Lots available.

Spurs are a must! O.k., for those using the wool pads, what, and where are you ordering from. I have put mine through their paces and am not happy with the pads I ordered the last time. Tempted to go back to foam, but since this thread popped up, figured I'd toss the question out there.

Can’t go wrong with 3M pads. Another good choice is “4 Star Products” “Avenger” and “Aggressor” for polishing or compounding. Last time I bought them I think I got them from Auto Geek.

The admiral and I do our 340. AStart with a full cooler and a Good deep cleaning, scrub all the stains, then 2 coats of Maguires Premium Marine wax. (The black bottle) Put it on with Maguires waxer, take of access with microfiber, buff with high speed rotary buffer and then final wipe down with clean microfiber. Do everything below the rubrail. Takes better part of a day.

What do you clean with. I have found a good cleaning really helps. I use hull cleaner from west marine. Anything better?

I have used several different products. Maguires boat soap, Smoove boat soap being the most frequent. For the stains, etc - I use a product called Awesome stuff. Get it at the local Dollar Store for $3 per gallon. It is citrus based and can be used full strength or diluted along with a semi soft small hand brush. Diluted it does not appear to strip wax/polish. Usually about July 4th or so, I will use a good spray and wipe detailer with an exceptional UV protectant as a freshen up. 303 has been my go to for last couple years for this. There are tons of products out there. Most important thing to do is apply whatever product on an overcast day or in the shade with temp between 65 and 80 degrees. (Too cold, the wax will not do its job and be hard to remove, too hot, you risk swirl marks.) This is the temperature most products are easiest to work with and work best. Once you get it to where you want it, stay on top of it. Like anything else, it is easier to maintain than try and catch up from behind.

Agree with Mike on 303 products. Use them on my cars and my boat. Actually started with my boat about 20 years ago.

I have used Meguiers, buff magic and 3M stuff over the years and I am not incredibly impressed by them. I was out of everything so I am trying this stuff this winter.... I have heard good things... if it doesn't work out I don't think I will be worse off if I stuck with the old stuff

http://www.smoovewax.com/products.html

Smoove "Bubble Gum" Micro Polish + High Gloss Polymer
Smoove Pro-Cut 1000 "The Matrix"
Smoove "White Cloud" High Gloss Polymer

I did the Smoove last season. Used all 3 steps. Love the boat wash. Only used wax above the rub rail. Stuck with the Maguieres on the hull. The Smoove did look really nice right after application but didn't seem to last as long. Hull still beading when tucked away for winter. Ended up going back to Maguieres about mid July as top side became dull and just didn't have that soft and smooth feel to the surface. Have been a fan of the Maguieres since 2004 but always open to try new products. Going to stick with the Maguieres this season. First coat in mid March and freshen up above rub rail in mid July if needed. Staying with the Smoove wash though. It seems to clean the best.

I am convinced there is no magic bullet out there. I am getting a little tired of being told this stuff is the best in the world and its just as crappy as the last stuff I tried... But I will continue to carry on because you can't do nothing.

And there you have it. The only place that concept is more prevalent is black tank chemical...

We wash our wool pads in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Dry them on gentle heat. Have done this for years and it does not seem to hurt them at all. They are not West Marine. Purchased at an automotive store. Don't remember them being expensive and they do last.

I'm curious about the washing them in the washing machine. Does this leave any residue in the washing machine? This sounds akin to keeping my bait in the main freezer...the wife doesn't necessarily appreciate the urgency.

If your wife is like mine I wouldn't bring it up and do them yourself when she's out of the house :)

My Admiral is very particular, and we have washed wax towels and pads for years without issue. We do not wash unmentionables in the next wash. Most likely some cleanup work towels first, then a jeans load before delicates.

Ha! I asked before I did it the first time, and no noticeable effects on subsequent loads. We have a big yard and do lots of dirty landscaping jobs on a regular basis. Our clothes are far worse than wool pads after working in the yard all day. I did make the mistake of putting a greasy rag in the wash one day after working on a tractor. That ruined a nice white shirt, and I heard about that mistake. Buffing pads, not an issue. Just do them with a load of car wash towels, not your Sunday's best.
