Horrible squeal upon starting engine (at home on the trailer).
Last month I replaced the sea water pump that had been leaking out the front seal/ pulley (spraying salt water all over the front of the engine. As I feared, the salt water got into the alternator, corroding and seizing the unit. $257 mercury marine part on its way.

I just had to replace everything on the front side (actually back side, v drives) for both engines for this, bad water pumps, spraying salt water, alternators bad, pulleys corroded, multiple hose clamps, etc.

Update: discovered that dB electrical sells new marine grade alternators for $70

I put one of the aftermarket ones on my 260da and 4years later it was still perfect when I got rid of the boat.

This year my starboard alternator locked up at the end of the season. Looks like some water was dripping on it from a loose hose on the heat exchanger. Probably was going on all summer and didn't notice. Then let it sit for a few weeks and it was locked.

These things happen in boating. Fortunately I was able to break it free for winteration and it only cost me a pulley and my spare belt. I am now planning in replacing both alternators and belts in the spring.

Welcome aboard!

Return the Mercruiser alternator if you can - they don't make alternators and there are plenty of aftermarkets that are just as good and a lot less $$.

When I hear all the horror stories about the damage that saltwater does. I sure am thankful I’m in freshwater.

Many of Those, like me, that boat in saltwater just don’t have an option to be in fresh water.

Yes, it takes a little more effort, money and time, but it’s out of our control.

On the other hand, I have access to great beaches, fishing and clamming. Not a knock of you freshwater guys, it’s just the way it is.

While I love being on the sweet water seas I would trade in a second to be on the water somewhere warm all year round and on the ocean. It’s the retirement plan for my wife and I for the cold months of the year.
