For Now!
Has anyone here traveled from Gulf Coast areas to Cancun before? I am looking into options of moving a 2000 model 380 with gasoline power to Cancun soon... and just wondering if anyone has made this trip. Simply looking for options, routes, ideas, increased fuel capacity and stops along the route.

Thanks!

David

Straight line distance estimates:

Galveston: 500 miles
Matagorda: 500 miles
Corpus Christi: 500 miles

Hugging the coast from Galveston: 1575 miles

That's all I got.

You’re going to have to have a significant amount of fuel in bladders. I’m in Galveston but that’s a really long trip to try and make in a gas boat.

Very long trip for a Gas boat.

What would the distance look like if you went down to Key West and then hopped over from there.

Either case - the cockpit is going to have fuel bladders. Not a trip that I would choose to make.

we had a member on here do the reverse of that trip in a diesel 400db - he carried additional fuel in a large tank in the cockpit IIRC

not sure of infrastructure along the coast of Mexico if you hugged the coast.....if you went straight across you would have to chug (hull speed) the whole way and would still probably need 300+ gallons on deck - if Oly Parker could run a twin outboard robalo from wisconsin to the Cayman Islands in the 70s or 80s, I'm sure the run you're talking about is possible, but I would try to find another way

We know some one who went from San Diego to Cobo in a 52 foot Viking. He arranged for fuel at small villages along the way and they delivered it to his boat in 45 gallon drums. This was 30 years ago. In Loreto in the Baja we had one friend who was going to take a 34 foot SeaRay from the north end of Mexico. He found fuel would be a problem. We go to Alaska in our gas boat but their are marinas along the way. We can go 250 knots on full tanks if we go at 6 knots. If we go fast we go 100 knots on full tanks.

THANKS for all the suggestions!

I would NOT choose the Mexico Coastline for the reasons that it is a longer trip, not American Friendly at this time and I have a lot more openings for better fuel pricing going to Florida first. The run from Key West to Hemingways in Havana is a short jump... which means carrying a couple plastic 55 gal drums or a caged plastic 100 gallon cell would be the way to geaux.

Now if only the weather would play nice!! Has anyone Day tripped to Cuba or from Galveston Bay to the Emerald Coast of the Gulf?

Never made the trip to Cuba, but have talked with Captains who have.

Their comment was the Gulf Stream crossing going to Cuba is much worse than going to the Bahamas.

No idea on accuracy.

From what I have heard from friends taking their sport fishing boats from my area (West Cost Of FL) to Cancun/Cozumel, there is an area where the Gulf Of Mexico Loop Current meets the Gulfstream currents. It is where a southbound current meets the eastward bound Gulfstream. I don't know the exact position, but I believe the general area is W-NW of Havana and SW of Key West. There is a name for this area, I just can't recall it.

This area, at times can get pretty nasty if you decide to go the KW route. It gets to be a mixed sea coming from a few different directions. A few cruise ships I have been on, it was smooth sailing most of the trip. Once we hit the convergence area, you could notice the movement of the ship and the look of the sea state looked a lil nasty.

You may want to consider having an SSB marine radio with you as you will probably be out of VHF range from a lot of Mexican shore stations. A sat phone and a Cat II EPIRB as a minimum. Good luck with you trip capt.
