Thoughts after first summer on a 400 after moving up from a 340

That panel behind the XX suggests that someone swapped a 41XX for a 21XX? I sure don't miss that monster. I counted one time: 17 key presses to adjust the screen brightness! I sold mine to a CSR member over your way. I have to give those old XX's credit - they're actually very good scanners! In several ways, it out-performs the Garmin dome that I replaced it with.

I'm jealous of your nice panels. Can you get matching replacement for the instrument row? I have a home-made starboard panel holding my VHF and I managed to fit everything else in just by luck, but the factory panels look horrible.

I agree about the Fusion app. It's one too many steps, or maybe just too unreliable to serve as a remote. All three of my MFD's can control the Fusion, so I only use the Fusion remote for it's volume knob. I bought a close-out Garmin 741. The software it runs shows a "Media" button on the main screen, so with one tap it becomes a 7" touchscreen remote. If I had something to fill the space where the Fusion remote is (mine is where your TriData is), I'd move it below the cupholders and toward the door so it was more accessible.

I'm curious why the Raytheon plotter survived the last dash remodel...
I replaced my panels last year. All of them and I think I got them from Flounder Pounder.

I was on one of these boat a few months ago looking around..... what the heck is that tiny room good for?

It's for seating, or sleeping. The upper, and lower cushions are over seven feet long, and 34" wide. We have a 6' tall 16 year old that sleeps there with no problem.

If the admiral and I had stopped at two kids we would have strongly considered the Express. Those bunks are slick...

If you hadn't had any kids, you could've considered an L550. :D

If I wouldn't of had any kids the L550 would have be sitting in front of a 5000sq. ft. house on the island of St. John in the Caribbean.:D:D:D

You guys are too much! If you hadn't had any kids you would have ended up divorced with a 1977 240...

I think you guys may be slightly over estimating the level of investment required to raise small humans!

Either that......or I'm drastically under-spending. :)

Honestly, the no kids part is the main reason we're able to afford to buy and use our boat.

That is us. Amazingly it is so hard for our friends to get away to join us on the boat, the younger ones are still chasing kids, while the older ones are chasing grandkids. LOL

Kids are crazy expensive to raise and it only gets worse as they gets older. Car insurance alone is killer. I’ve got two in private colleges this year. A senior and a freshman. Overall cost for both of their schools combined for tuition, room, board, books, etc., will be about 500k out of my pocket.
They’re lucky I’m a planner.
Among other things, I’m planning on them paying for my oatmeal and diapers in a few years.

Try having a son and then losing him. My son was killed six months ago and I'd give anything to have him back. Boats are nice toys but my son was everything in the world to me.

So sorry to hear of your loss. No one is truly equating trading kids for boats, it is just some light winter banter.

So Sorry for your loss and may God bless you and your family.

No offense taken or intended. Believe me working on the boat is all that keeps me sane these days.

Ya, munchkins cost plenty of $$$$ but if it weren't for kids I wouldn't have ever had any boat at all. My three grandkids were my boatbuds up until a couple years ago. They're busy with other stuff now and I think they realized Gramps ain't as cool as they thought. My boating has taken a turn for the worse without them...just seems not as much fun.

If I live long enough maybe my grandkids will have some kids and I'll be good for another 10yrs and one more boat.:D

Yup ...my kid is the whole reason we have a boat. Boating brings us all together and does away with all the distractions of every day life. When we're on the boat, it's all about the family and nothing else.

+1. We basically forego any real family vacations, save maybe Great Wolf once a year, to be able to boat in the summers. It's our cottage. It's the best family time money can buy for our family.

I can't imagine. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Yeah......hmmmm....college is a hotly debated topic within my social circle(s). I would say two thirds of the folks I live/work with are not planning to fully pay for their kids college. It's just not realistic for many/most, particularly in lower cost of living locations.

Another perspective - if I could choose to save now to 100% cover all of my kids college or choose to spend now on a decent sized boat, slippage, fuel and every summer weekend family time while the kids still like hanging around...well now we have a decision to make. :)
