420 DA Thread

I would talk to Tony at www.sbmar.com. He has a strong opinion on different motor mounts. Take really good pictures and explanation of what the perceived problem is.

This was discovered during survey. No signs of rust but during the backdown test and at idle it was more apparent on one motor vs the other(6 out of the 8 were termed "end of service life").
How many hours ?

less than 500 hours.

I still don't understand the problem? You say no rust but were the engine mounts cracked? Was the engine vibrating excessively? Was the engine(s) "jumping" from the mounts? Did YOU witness anything yourself or the surveyor just said "end of service life?"

I witnessed the movement on starboard engine at idle (all four mounts were noted as bad on that engine). Port motor movements were noted during backdown. I’m not doubting the findings as this was confirmed by engine and marine surveyor as well. I’m curious as to wether or not replacements could balloon into a bigger issue with the stringers. Visually I couldn’t see any corrosion on the mounts. I’m not familiar with how the mounts interact with the isolators and I’m waiting on my written results but wanted to get a jump on cost estimates to repair.

It is hard to believe you have lost engine mounts at 500 hours especially all four.... I don't have a great picture but do they look like mine?... maybe yours were changed out for some reason in the past and installed wrong. If your serious about the boat I would get Cummins to look at them and definitely talk to Tony

Yes the mounts appear to be the same. Starboard motor was replaced in 09. Will reach out to Tony as well.

The master mechanic at my marina told me that the "rubber" piece in the mount deteriorates over time due to the harsh conditions in the engine room: heat, diesel, oils, etc. This causes the engine to move slightly, thus making things out of alignment.

I want to replace the “44” on my transom. Anyone know if there is a place that sells them? I looked at Flounder Pounder and Great Lakes already. Maybe just have them made????

Do you have Boatus? I have ordered graphics and had great luck.

Hi Villain, I ordered them for my last boat. I'll look through my old pics to see if there are any pics that would show them.

I don't know much about this but it's my understanding that along with adjusting the motor mounts for best driveline alignment, that the actual weight being supported on/by them should equalized as much as possible.

I could imagine a situation where 3 mounts could be adjusted to achieve the alignment goal with the fourth doing virtually nothing. Not properly supporting the engine weight could show up in what ways? Vibrations, mount deterioration, excess engine movement....maybe, I dunno.

OK - I was just curious if they matched the font and size.

Here is a picture of the graphics I ordered from Boatus. Type in what you want for text or numbers and then you can play with the font, size, and color.

Removed Smartcraft for repair, all analog gauges went pfffft. Thought it was related to having Smartcraft out but...no. Just replaced overhauled Smartcraft and it works perfect but still no analog gauges work. Thoughts??

Analogue guages are fed by smartcraft. Would have thought otherwise but that's what Cummins tech told me. Sorry can't help more but I would target that smartcraft and connections.

Thanks. Anyone have any insight here? Connections seem A-OK

A few years back I purchased a 420 with a bad fuel guage. I was told by the Searay dealer who was the broker it needed a sending unit. Before I tore the boat apart to get to the sender I decided to see what the smart craft had to say. Some one had changed the settings for the fuel section to oil pressure! Needless to say this input did nothing for the fuel guage. After changing the setting to fuel the analog guage on the dash worked.

Is there any chance your settings got changed during the repair?
Good luck, I know how hard something like this is to find sometimes.

Well that is interesting. How did you know how to change the setting to the fuel gauge? I am trying to find the diagram to see what goes where on the Smartcraft. Thank you very much for the insight!
