Grand Haven

The ice doesn't take out the docks at Grand Isle?? Well....a few got smoked a few years back I suppose.

I'm sure this is a pipe dream. It's fun to talk about. It would be interesting if they could use those existing pilings for future docks but this all seems a bit far fetched the more I type :)
Grand Isle does get damage from time to time even though it enjoys a slightly better location in terms of ice flow. Slips there are not very deep and the concrete docks are stout. The sand mine area gets more water and ice flow and the water there is deep (30') to accommodate the ships that used to call there. Floating docks would likely be required due to water depth and are not as strong as docks built on pilings. Moving ice would destroy them if they were left in the water year round. The condos east of the Holiday Inn tried traditional permanent wooden docks when that development was first built. Those docks were destroyed after the very first winter by ice out in the following Spring.

That makes sense.

I suppose we always have "the sag"! I've never gone back in there. I've always wondered how deep that is these days...

The sag requires local knowledge. We ventured in there when we first moved here and promptly touched the bottom, backed out and never returned. There are safe ways in, but I don't know them.

Docks on the other side would sure make for interesting passage when one of the freighters comes up river to the load/unload.
Great pic of the stadium!
I thought with the purchase of the land that it is locked into a park now - no room for development?
North Shore too! D-dock.
I've sent quite a few emails to the marina manager - not very responsive to the idea. Will keep trying though. Good point about the DNR. May try that avenue...
Trying to catch up on the posts. Sorry for the choppy response....

The sag is 3-4 foot deep. Pretty darn shallow. You can run along the east side of the sag and it’s about 5 foot.

To my knowledge the only development they were talking about for the sand mine property was a campground for tent camping and developed hiking trails. The tree huggers hate boaters and will usurp any attempt at shore development

After 4 years of construction on Grand Haven’s the south pier, the lights are back on. Yeh !

Can’t see very well from the picture but they were dropping bumpers down the side of the ship in case they hit the wall.
Winds were crazy that day, two people drowned at the beach with several others rescued.
Sad end to the festival.
Geez... That's awful
