Upgrading Electronics

0183 and 2000 are definitely different and not everything will translate, but most will. What I described is not converting 0183 to 2000. It's just a modern MFD reading the 0183 sentences that the course computer is spitting out. Still no promises on them understanding each other completely, but I can tell you from my experience that my modern Garmin MFD is reading the autopilot which is connected to the course computer via SeaTalk and then the course computer is feeding that info to the MFD via 0183.

I love the look of your panel ... I just bought a 2002 Sea Ray Sundancer with the original RayMarine instruments. The GPS/Radar is old and not working great, and the panel is outdated. I am trying to get one screen, maybe two, max, so I have a nice clean look. I like redundancy (the pilot in me!), but don't have a ton of boat bucks since I just bought the boat.

Did you look at Garmin? It seems pricey. I'm curious as to what you looked at before going with the package you set up, which looks great by the way.

Also, in terms of functionality - can you tell me how many displays can show your radar, GPS/Charts, sonar, speed, other engine functions such as fuel burn, do you have an autopilot?

Sorry for so many questions but I really like your set up, just have so much to learn.

Thanks.
Yep, as you can see from my before pics, it was all Raymarine/Raytheon.

Honestly, I didn't look at any other brands, mostly because my marina owner is a Raymarine dealer, and early on into the project we both decided that we were going to use my installation as sort of a demo for other customers of his to showcase the upgrade possibilities on an almost 20 year old boat.

So, all 3 displays can show all options available. The one thing I have not upgraded is the original LCD systems monitor. That's one of the projects during layup this Winter. I really want to know fuel flow data, so we're going to upgrade to something fancy, and install it to the left of the eS7 on the center dash. And yes, I do have autopilot. Changed from the original Raytheon head to the new Raymarine unit on the right side of the center dash. I'll post some more pics once we get Vesselview installed.

The installers have talked about older NEMA 0183 are a different version than the current 2.0 and they often do not get along.

I am not talking at all about 2000, there is a NEMA 0183, 2.0, on newer equipment that has more data capability than the original 0183. I have been told they often do not work together as the 2.0 overwhelms the ability of the original version with to much data.

Got you. But what I was saying still holds true in case. From my understanding the Raytheon course computer is 0183 2.0 and the newer MSDs that have an 0183 input are 2.0 as well. I don't know the history of all Raytheon course computers, but mine is on a 1998 boat and from a feeble memory I think it's an S2.

Well I hope my 2000 age units are are as well. The installers may have been hedging their bets or using it to jack a bid.

If there are issues, get them to show you the connections on the course computer. If the 0183 connections are in pairs A(+) and B(-) with an separate, dedicated ground wire, then your course computer is the 0183 2.0 version. If the connections are just a single wire connection then it's the older version of 0183. Hope that helps.
