Convert "through-hull" exhaust back to stock?

Hi all, newbie here -
Looking at a 2006 270 SLX, but was overwhelmed by the noise when idling in the marina...makes it a no-go, despite everything else being positive (and a deal I'd jump at). Yes, when the exhaust was switched, it was even louder, so it was in the right position.

Any opinions on taking the exhaust back to stock level? Possible, rough costs, drawbacks?

Engine Brand: MerCruiser.
Year Built: 2006
Engine Model: 496
Engine Type: Inboard/Outboard
Engine/Fuel Type: Gas/Petrol
Drive Type: Stern drive
Engine Power: 430 HP
Hours: 475

Thank you!

Be careful. Sometimes thru hull is exhaust is added to correct or prevent exhaust water reversion and resulting engine damage. Has the engine been modified from stock to gain horsepower? If so the camshaft valve overlap may have made the thru hull exhaust necessary.

Thanks for the advice. Definitely kills the initiative. Appreciate it!

I have always found, just be patient, wait for the boat you want. Many buyers make mistakes rushing. Keep looking for what you want.

Switched like in a "captains call" system ? If so, the solenoids that open and close the flaps probably aren't closing all the way. It should be quiet

Going from memory, I think you are right that it was a Captain's Call.

But even if it was the Q&Q II system from Corsa (auto switch), it should still be quiet. You'd still hear a little bit of a rumble with a big block in there, but in no way should it be anything near obnoxious - it really should be pretty close to a normal exhaust.

Agree with the above - something is malfunctioning. You can probably get this worked into the deal in one way or the other.

I have to tell you I love when a side exhaust boat idle by........ sounds great.

The Admiral would argue with you, she thinks them obnoxious show-offs. We have a huge lake and the roar near anchored groups to announce their "coolness". They almost always rev the engines when they fire up in the dock, and apparently they need more engine attention as they seem to have mechanics working on them, and revving the engines, more than most boats in the marina.

We have a friend that we go out with often that has a very quiet running boat and you should see the frustration when he shows the go-fast guys what fast is without the show-off sound. LOL

I had a solenoid go bad in my Baja exhaust back in the day. I was only getting switching from one side and it was still "pretty darn loud" when switched to quiet when around solid sea walls. A pretty affordable repair from what I remember....

Our Yacht Club does not allow boats with straight exhaust. Boats are loud enough anyway.

Thanks. Supply for what I'm looking for is surprisingly small, so I'm trying to be creative while controlling risk. I've got a six months til season here in MD.
