Sporatic overheating questions.

Replaced both shutters on the engines wasn't all that difficult once I googled the procedure. Also found out that both risers needed replacing so did that also as also both riser bellows. Engines on muffs run about 150 to 160 at the coolant reservior and cooler at the hoses and very cool at the risers. Still have to run it at the lake to see if it stays cool. Have one thing left to do and that is shift adjustment and need help with that so will have to get my wife to hold the prop. There is also a very slow leak somewhere doesn't seem to be at the shift cable entry. Only causes the pump to come on once a day for about 10 seconds. It could of been the brass drain plug as it didn't have tape on it. I have caulked all the spots where water can enter so I can only hope I have solved the issue. If not I will pull the outdrives and replace the shift bellows(even though they are new). It has cooled down now so I can get things finished up and get the boat out to the lake.

Glad to see you're making progress!

Bronze drain plugs do not need tape. It is a soft metal and seals against itself. IF that turns out to be the problem, then the fitting/mating area is buggered up good. However, it could be that the garboard drain, itself, is not sealed anymore and is allowing water in... which also means it is saturating the wood in your transom.

If it's leaking enough to turn the bilge pump on within a day, you should be able to find the leak rather easily.

I will look again when I get it back in the water, with twin 470's it is really hard to see in there and explore around it is dark and very tight, both my son and I have probed around looking but can't spot anything. I sealed the area around the drain even though it looked tight, I also sealed around the outdrives and any areas where lines go thru. The drain plug and drain seem to be in good shape.
I have two bilge pumps a 2000 gph and a 850 gph hooked to a a automatic pump switch and I keep a solar charger hooked up to the batteries when I am not there. Things as always could go wrong but I always check the boat out every couple of days when I have it in the water. Doesn't solve the problem but what can you expect for a 41 year old boat. I am going to give up the slip and dry store it, alot less expensive(250.00 against 75.00 month) and won't have to worry about it.
