For the last few months, my sb 350 carbed. engine starter had a strange noise on starting.i also noticed that the starb starting battery wea very low on electrolite. I changed the battery with new. Now the starter is inoperative and there is no alarm sound when the ignition is turned on. Prior to this starting failure I noticed excessive charging rate on the volt gauge. I suspect the starter and/or the 90 amp starter fuse are toast. Your expert opinion is appreciated.

Checked further today. The 90 amp fuse on the starter is visibly burnt. I ordered a starter and a 90 amp fuse today. What would cause my dashboard volt meter to show around 16 volts at 3500 rpm. usually these motors show around 11 1/2 volts at 3500 rpm's and cruising. All is bone stock and I bought this boat new 10 years ago.

Whether it’s 11.5 volts or 16 volts at 2500 rpm, both are a problem.
Weak batteries, low electrolyte,
Rusty or corroded ground connections, loose belts......
Check and correct all of those first.
If it still persists, I would suspect a faulty voltage regulator. Time for a new alternator.

Okay, Espos. I am going to replace the starter and it's 90 amp fuse. When it does start, I will check the alternator output and change it if needed. I do have the Merc service manual #31 which is for the 250 hp 350 cid carbed engine. Thanks for your advice.

Thanks to all for technical advice. The overcharging alternator must have caused battery and starter problems. Now all fixed and purrs like a kitten. Griff.
