Carpet backing brittle - any way to save them?

Looks great! Bringing it down to the boat tonight. I will post results. (at the end of the season)
Carpets are perfect at the end of the season, and no debris.
Why pay crazy money for Flex Seal when this stuff works so good!?
It's your money.

The white RV roofing coating is awesome and going strong 2 years later in Alabama heat. I posted into a while back

I just did mine with white elastomeric roof coating ( $25 a Gal. at Home Depot ) as mentioned in previous threads. We'll see how it turns out.
I just did the same thing to the cockpit carpet on our 07. This process extended the life of the carpets in our 420DA by 5 years.

I tried flex seal and it worked incredible. The bottom of all the carpets look brand new. In addition I like the white so much better than the white in case it flakes. The stuff gives off a smell for days so think before you do this in your home or somewhere else....I didn't and laid out plastic and did them downstairs. I highly recommend doing this if the black dust/ flakes make you crazy!!! Good luck!

Glad it worked so well for you. Let us know long term in a year or so.

When your carpet with the crumbling black backing finally reaches the end of its life, consider not replacing it. Your cockpit floors will be in like new condition. Going bare makes cleaning the boat so much easier. If your prefer to replace the carpet, there is a marine carpet of higher quality that wears like iron. It has a backing that is clear, flexible, and does not breakdown. With any kind of care at all, it seems to have an almost limitless service life. The fabric side is a dense, cutpile nylon that is very robust as well. Ask your full service marina about carpet quality and for samples. You can see the differences.

Going bare has its issues as well. It tracks dirty so fast. Always cleaning it.

Sure it shows the dirt more, but carpet just hides/holds it.

Kinda like when the Admiral uses a swifter mop at home and says "look at how clean it got the floor", while showing me the maxi pad that she pulls off and throws into the trash. That's when I say "keep putting a new pad until the pad comes up off of the floor clean. That's when the floor is clean."

My OCD will not allow me to see footprints on the cockpit floor... LOL

Most of the stuff that gets tracked in is easy to clean. We have a fresh water wash down in the cockpit for big messes. The minor stuff I just wipe up with a chamois on a stick. Keep your dock clean and the boat stays clean. I've never been a huge carpet fan because of all the dirt they hide. We do have carpet in our upper cockpit but getting the vacum out is more work than just hosing things down, which is what we do in the lower cockpit.

I agree with you completely, for your boat, I would do it the same. My pier mate has a slightly smaller Tira so I see how your boat lives. Our boat use is somewhat different than yours.

We both use it to travel, but ours doubles as a summer getaway home. We have had 12 people onboard for cocktails. My carpets clean fast and hide the dirt when we have quests. I see all the tracking I would have on the swim platform.

The carpets I have on the boat have a black rubber backing. The backing has gotten so dry it's brittle. Any ideas on slowing this process down or stopping it. The black is flaking off and making a mess and/ or it's sticking to the deck.

Thanks for any help!!!

Steve, did you find a solution to your problem with the carpet backing?

The white backing works..... not sure how anything could work better short of new carpet.
