Chartplotter for 99 340 Sundancer

I traced a cup holder so I knew what would be cut out, screwed a peace of wood to it with screws inside that circle, the. Used a hole saw in reverse.. came out perfect. So much so I debating putting one on the other side.

After running the boat a few weeks a couple things became apparent. First, a companion cupholder was desperately needed. Second was I really liked the touch screen. I have a Garmin 1040xs on our CC and really like it but takes up a LOT of real estate. I decided to go with the Raymarine Axiom 9. I'm pleased with the results so far but it is obvious this unit isn't nearly as user friendly for navigation. It works great but did take a little getting used to. I was able to Seatalkng the tridata for depth (for now, will add the chirp through hull transducer this winter) and in the spot next to the spotlight control I added a double cupholder. The cupholder is almost the perfect angle for this application. This weekend I'll be adding the vfh below with mic mounted next to the shifters to prevent knee damage exiting the helm. I made beveled black lexan covers for the lower holes, one of which will have the new vhf. The second will be for future expansion. I bought the new burl dash covers but don't want to put those on until I'm satisfied completely with the layout. So far so good .

Here's the final layout (I think). I like it to this point. I bought black caps for the screw heads on the new lexan covers but they didn't fit. I'll get those on next weekend. I'm pleased!

Where did you get the wood grain plastic. To match?

tbrown,I’m going to order those dash panels from flounder pounder. The only one I’m un sure of is the one on the face of the dash to cover my old electronic hole. Is that the 4 x 8 they offer online?

The one where the vhf I believe was a 4 X 8. I just looked at all their panels and found one I could cut/rout to fit

Can you guys elaborate on how the “NMEA2000” works? I’m in the market for a chart plotter, stereo, and DSC VHF and I’ve been trying to figure out what stereo I could use with my remote at the helm. It sounds like with the right chart plotter and Fusion stereo combo I can skip the helm mounted remote all together. If that’s the case what am I looking for?
Thanks guys

NMEA is a "mostly" standard communication protocol for marine electronics. It also incorporates a standard cable scheme (with some connection exceptions) to connect capable devices. If you have an NMEA head unit (like the Fusion) and a NMEA chartplotter you would connect them via a NMEA cord and they would "talk". If you have a NMEA VHF you could also connect that via another cable which would then incorporate the VHF into your network.

How well you are able to control each devices functions from the chartplotter will depend a bit on the chartplotter. I don't think user interface is standard across brands so choose wisely.

Garmin bought Fusion, so they integrate well. So yes, you can skip a helm-mounted remote, at least if you go with a Garmin/Fusion setup and choose an MFD with friendly media features. I've heard people say that they want one anyway because they don't want to switch screens away from nav info just to adjust audio, but my larger Garmin MFD allows a "media bar" overlay on the nav screens. The 741 has a single button in the home row to bring-up media. Since networking them all together, I only use the remote for it's volume knob. If I were to build a system from scratch today, I wouldn't include a $200 volume knob.

This is my impression too. I haven't actually played with a pairing of diverse media and MFD, but the fact that even my Garmin units have differences in the interfaces leads me to expect differences between brands.

I love the way my lowrance handels the fusion.

Sure thing I will be at the boat this weekend. Maybe I can take a 60 second short video of how it interfaces with it. I am sure there is a video on youtube already but when I was watching before I bought it was the older software and not he bottom now its on the side.

My Lowrance is also running smart craft data to it.
