Have any of you ever added 2 more speakers in the arch of your 340? I was thinking of adding 2 more JL's. Maybe the 770's in the current hole and moving the 650's up a little. Just thinking.

i have not done this but i have to ask why?.....IMO that would really not accomplish anything as far as the sound of the stereo goes....you would just be adding extra speakers in the same physical location of the existing speakers.....if you are not happy with the sound of the current arch speakers why not just upgrade them, even if you need to go to a larger speaker and possibly add an amp to power them?......

Adding another pair of speakers, doubles the speaker surface area. Thats absolutely a noticeable increase in volume. On the flip side, if it doesnt sound good now, adding speakers will make it twice as crappy sounding :p . Adding a pair of larger 7.7, is about 120% more surface area compared to a 6.5, so an even larger increase in output, as well as a little more mid-bass extension.

In a perfect world, you would want 2 open amp chnls for the larger 7.7, so they can be tuned independently of the smaller 6.5".

i agree that adding additional speakers in the arch would increase the overall 'volume' of the music but as Wylie_Tunes stated it will not increase the 'quality' of the music if you don't use good quality speakers....

but another question i have is why would you want to have the arch speakers sounding so much louder than the other cockpit speakers?....you can accomplish the same thing by adjusting the fader control on the head unit to push more sound from the arch speakers.....

If I must explain more I will. I already Have 4 MX6.5 JL's and a 500W JL amp along with a 10 JL Sub with a 250W amp. The sound is good. The 7.7's are more about mid base and sound area. Why do they put 10 speakers in a car... Because putting in the doors, dash rear deck ect sounds much better that having 2 in the rear deck. I wasn't only going to add to the the arch. I was thinking of another pair of 7.7's. One next to the sub and one under the helm seat. I'd have a total of 8 with 3 amps. I was only asking is someone has done it.....

thanks for the explanation...i was only asking questions to see what you were trying to accomplish....i like trying different things too, i just couldn't see your vision on this project....admittedly sound systems are not one of my strongest areas of knowledge....

good luck with the project if you move forward....i imagine an open cockpit in a boat is going to be a far more challenging theater than an enclosed car in trying to get the best sounds from the stereo....

I see (4) speakers in the arches pretty regularly around my area. It's not unusual. It surely seems to make it wicked loud when you're rafted up next to someone but it has a remarkably small effect on the volume behind the boat while swimming. Not sure if that's something you were trying to accomplish but thought I'd share...

So has anyone added additional speakers to help with volume and quality while swimming behind a 340? If so, what and where? Been contemplating doing so, but not sure what would work best.

I was looking at that too. I wish someone made those mounts that are flush with the curve of the transom, but mount the speaker inside vertical. I saw something like that on a newer one a while back. Cant find them now.

I was looking to install something like that under the Arch, my wife always complain she can't hear the music while underway. These are the stealth series 10 core from wetsounds, I believe they can swivel to (not sure), that would be cool with you can so you can have sound on the bow while on the hook.

The most efficient means to get music behind the boat is going to be a tranom mounted speaker or a tower pod mounted to the arch. In these scenarios, we like to setup some form of zone volume control for the main cabin and rear projecting speakers. This allows you to dial down the main cabin when you want to crank the rear projecting speakers.

I have 4 JL 7.7s in my arch plus 4 behind the speaker grills behind the captain's chair, 2 in front of the rear bench and 2 on the transom. 2 JL 10" subs. Sounds great!

I have a volume control on the transom speakers so I can turn them off when at the dock.

How are transom speakers installed?

Do you have a picture what the arch speakers look like?

Transom speaker get cut in much like you would mount a speaker on the interior. You need an area thats flat enough for the speaker and access behind it.

One nice thing about arch mounted pods (facing aft) is that they are generally covered when the boat is covered. Speakers mounted to your transom or transom locker door will generally be exposed. Worth considering...

A downside to arch mounted pods, depending on the size of the boat, is the potential loss of headroom.
