i have my boat listed for sale on Craigslist and popyachts keeps trying to get ahold of me to list my boat. Is this a ligit company? Should I let them list my boat for sale?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a thread on here not too long ago about them. They're not a good company to deal with from what I gathered from that thread.

Lots of negative press. Never had dealings with them but would stay away because of forum comments both here and THT

I think I am the one that started that thread a few months ago that was mentioned. We were buying a boat that was local to us and was docked near us a few years ago. We knew it was for sale and contacted the owner, not knowing it was listed with PY. The seller had contacted PY earlier this year to list the boat and since they said they had no sales agents close the seller had to do all of the work (take a bunch of pics and send them in with a description). They never heard from PY again and PY never saw the boat in person. The seller cancelled the contract and sold it to us. As far as I know PY never contacted them again about it.

Before that we looked at a 270DA and the seller told me PY contacted him and wanted him to send his title to them. He sensed something wasn't right so didn't sign with them. From what I have heard they want to hold your title so you can't sell it without them.

Either way, avoid them at all costs.

Popyachts typically adds on between $5-$10k or 10% depending on what is for sale. I only know this because I've seen several boats that were listed by owner only to have PY pick them up at a later date and I noticed the price change. To me it makes no sense. They use the SAME pictures that the owner uses, price it higher, ask for offers, and still profit in the end.

Yep. They had the one I bought listed for $10k more than the seller was looking to get. In the end I got it for $15k less than PY had it listed for.

A friend of mine had found a boat listed with PY. He couldn't get a reply from PY, so I tried multiple times for him and they ignored me too. I ended up doing my own recon to contact the owner. I reached out to the yacht club where the pics were taken and posted on forums to see if anyone knew the owner. We found the owner and worked directly with him, but the boat ended up failing survey, so I don't know if PY would've tried to interfere in the sale.

They seem to cruise FSBOs (for sale by owners)...the classifieds..and try to poach them. From the boats I've looked at...(I've found the private for sale price, and I've seen the same boat listed by Pop)...they seem to tack on 10%. I see no harm in that, heck it's what a typical yacht broker makes on a yacht sale.

Example..when we were shopping last spring, there was a Formula 31 or 33 that caught my eye. From the picture in the classifies (I saw on craigslist (the private listing) and saw the Pop ad in boats.com)...I recognized the particular yard it was in. I sent Pop an inquiry asking to confirm the location so I could do a "drive by" to eyeball the Formula. Later that day a girl from Pop replied to me...confirming the location in Old Saybrook CT (across from a popular bar thus how I recognized it). The next morning I received an email from ANOTHER guy from POP warning me NOT to do a drive by, that they MUST meet me there, and NOT to contact the owner directly. The tone of his letter pissed me the heck off He probably fired the girl who initially replied to me. I envision some Kirby vacuum cleaner pyramid like scheme with Pop yachts.

Anyways, happened to see that Formula in the yard. big sign on its transom...with the owners phone number and a sale price of 16k. Pop was advertising it for 17,500. Actually met the owner another day..he was doing some cleanup on it, fully willing to sell to me, let me come on board and look at it, talked to him for quite a while, he just retired and his family already moved out west and he was urgently trying to sell the boat so he could pack up and catch up with his family out west, was very willing to lower the price. The boat needed more work that I was willing to do for this summer, so we passed. Every 2 weeks the boat lowered another 2k. Last time I saw it advertised it was down to 8500....good deal for a Formula with a pair of new 454's with <100 hours he just had put in last year.
But anyways, the tone of that second Pop broker that "yelled at me" in the email..turned me off.

Ok, I decided to let them list my boat. I set the price I need to get anything over that is theirs. I’m going to be very cautious and we will see what happens.

I would recommend that you find and read the previous thread in this. There was discussion that if someone registers with popyachts and looks at your boat in their site but comes through you directly then popyachts may come back after you for the commission. I dont remember all of the details but it was discussed thoroughly, and would be good context for you to have.

The guy that contacted me said I could continue to try and sell the boat myself. If I sell it they will just walk away from it. They are just going to list it at a price 10% higher then what I’m asking and the only way they make money is if they actually sell it. If someone finds my boat on popyachts and contacts me directly. I’ll just keep my price 10% higher than what I need to get for it.

So you come here asking about them. Got 100% negative reviews. And listed with them anyway? Good luck with that.

With everything said here, I find it hard to believe you would use them. Are there literally no other brokers in your area.

I wouldn’t say I’m listing it with them. I’m letting them list it. I will not be under any contract with them. If they find a buyer fine. I don’t see what I have to lose. I would never buy a boat through them.

I did biz with them a couple years back, yes there was a contract.

They might actually run off some good buyers.
