Moving up...to what?

So have been looking and speaking with a few owners who have their 480 and 420 DB listed for sale. It seems the 480s are sitting on the market much longer than the 420. In fact it seems the 420s are being snatched up fairly quickly. I’m now taking this into consideration should we decide to sell our next boat in the coming years. Seems the 480 will take much longer at resale.

Dean I did a quick search on YW there where 12 - 420db 2004 and up compared to 3 -480db same vintage and the 480 was $100,000 more than the 420 dB so less inventory and more money.maybe these owners are upside down on their boats and won’t let them go?
Larry couldn’t find one in the tri state area last year for sale

Could be. Found some of the 420 ads are old too. Some have been sold.

Not really a fair comparison. The last year of the 480 was 2004. Then it was rebadged the 500. The 420 existed for 2004 and 2005 (2006, too?). So of course you’ll find more of them.

if we would have looked at the cost on paper before we started boating I bet a high percentage of us would have not engaged this expensive pastime......:(......

I learned along time ago in flying airplanes, You never keep track of what it is costing you because if you do it is always on your mind and it takes the fun out of it!!

Wasn't the 2005 a substantially redesigned model over the 2004 480? I think it's this older styling that'll keep these boats on the market longer.

Actually, the 420db only existed for two model years then it became the 44Db same boat no major redesigns but you’ll pay more for a 44 than a 420. So the only model years we can compare I guess is 2004/05

2004 480Db.
2005 500 DB

The 52 is a beauty but i think the 480 design (interior and exterior) still holds up. Must be all that room! BTW why is that 52 running with no one at the helm, no mooring, just drifting 50 feet from shore...lol?

Dean we wanted the 480db but this boat fell into our laps
We argue with Greg about which layout is best and we both say it’s the other guys boats that we like. So no losers in this conversation.
That 52 dB must have the yachtcontroller ;) I pulled into Ziegler’s and tied up next to Larry’s boat singlehanded using the controller it’s weird not seeing anyone at the helm and the boat moving through a mooring field.
Obviously this is a photo shoot.

That, I don’t know. There was a big mod from 1998 to 1999 with the addition of the hard top. Somewhere around then a rounded top came into play. But I didn’t know there were major changes from 04 to 05? Maybe that accompanied the change to the 500? I don’t see many 05 480s.

I think the 1999-2004 480 models look great. I’m in the market myself and would happily get a 2000 480 over a 2004 420.

So the hard part I guess is done. Said farewell to our 320 this past weekend as the new owners took possession. (Slightly giddy about not having to winterize this season). Looking at a couple 480 DB and a 420 DB this weekend.

So many boat photos have these crazy settings. I know the answer is "photo shoot" but I can't figure out why they don't stage believable usage photos unless they're appealing to the "I just hire a captain" crowd. I've seen several with a guy on the flybridge and then the other people all in the aft cockpit -- do they just not like the guy? Or there's no apparent captain at all, which maybe you could get away with in the open ocean and autopilot, but it still seems kind of risky to all hang out in the aft cockpit with nobody minding the helm. Or the boat with no anchor deployed, no captain, no engine running but looks to be about 50 feet from a rocky shore with people going swimming.

My favorite is a Hinckley ad for the Picnic Boat 34 -- happy family on their Hinckley, two kids are on the rear swim deck in life vests but the engines are obviously running and mom looks like she wants to shove them in to get sucked into the jet drive.

Almost all '98's in the U.S. had the hard-top. The only exception I've ever seen was in Ft Myers Beach and I think I saw it half a dozen times before I realized it wasn't a Maxum! The top was rounded for the 2000 model, and they also swapped the salon slider to open from port instead of starboard.

I've never even heard of an '05 480DB. That doesn't mean they doesn't exist of course...

Congrats Dean! Best of luck on the search!!

Yep again congrats on the sale dean, any questions on maint etc on QSM11’s or anything text me.

We looked at a couple 480 DB and a 420 DB this past weekend. We have decided to cross the 420 DB off of our list. If we can get one at a good price the 480 would fit our family best. We've narrowed it down to the 2000-2001 (maybe a 2002). Aside from aftercoolers is there anything else to watch out for on the C3196's? Saw a 2000 this weekend that had less than 1k hrs and was told the aftercoolers were "inspected" recently. Also what are the thoughts on having one of these disassembled and shipped. There is one for sale out in the Midwest. Wondering if its worth investigating.
