Moving up...to what?

Gathering some good data points on this thread. Thanks all. I think its time to get out the old matrix and work up the pros and cons and wants vs needs. Fortunately we have friends with each of these models so a visit and a short cruise may be in order....we'll bring the treats!:) Truth be told we've never been out on a diesel much less a DB.
Just don’t make the mistake of putting all the expenses of each boat in a spreadsheet to compare the costs of the various models. I made the mistake of doing that and wow, this is an expensive hobby when you put it on paper no matter what model you are talking about.

Especially when you divide total cost of ownership by the number of days spent on boat overnight!!!

I see it a different way.

Think of the hours of time you would spend at a therapist (or bar). It adds up fast.

Take you favorite common destination and figure out what it would cost you to get the same experience. For us that would be Edgartown. We get a mooring at $40 per night, and it burns around 60 gallons in fuel round trip. A waterfront house or two bedroom hotel is around $800 per night. Ferry from our home port is about the same travel at around $70 per person X 3 which is close to our same fuel cost. We do around 10 nights a year in Edgartown alone.

I simply follow a rule "the more you use the boat the less it costs". Combine that with experience and pleasure you get and ROI becomes self evident :).

I agree and worth every penny spent but it still stings a bit to look at it on paper.

if we would have looked at the cost on paper before we started boating I bet a high percentage of us would have not engaged this expensive pastime......:(......

I did some math earlier this year...just out of curiosity. I think I was in a debate with my wife as to why we never take vacations :)

Per hour of runtime my boat costs me $375 per hour annually. Pure absurdity.

If you go by weekends aboard I'm closer to $768 per weekend. On-par with a nice hotel with a nice view?

But if you really want the feel-good number you go by hours aboard. $16 per hour aboard in my case.

Ahhhhhh....boating.....

If it were just the wife and I we would give serious thought to the 420. Part of me likes the thought of just running down to the marina and heading out at a moments notice without the worry of tides or bridges. However the space on the bridge boats is very attractive. The 42 and 48SD in the listed years are in the same price range hence why we are considering it. So realistically it’s between the 2. I think once we get down to it we’ll just bring the whole family to look at them both to get a feel for being aboard.

We would definitely spend more time aboard if we had the room and I think the kids wouldn’t mind it either. Last year we took a 2 week trip aboard our 320 and it was great except for those who were late sleepers vs early risers.

I also can’t get a good sense of the 48 SD clearance from the waterline to the hardtop. Have been searching but can’t find the specs.
48 SD? Are you looking at the 48 DA (Sundancer) or DB (Sedan Bridge)? not sure what the SD is?

then what is the DB?

'damn boat'......

I use this all the time referring to my boat.....so I own a '2001 340DA-DB'......;)....

We justify our boating expenses when we compare how much airfare and hotel to fly a family of 5 on vacation an average of 10-14 days per year. I think the numbers are up about 20k per year. With the boat we are on vacation from late April up until early Oct. Food not included. Sounds justifiable to me! And i refuse to write this down on a spreadsheet...;)

I have friends with a summer cottage. My costs are less.

Are you including depreciation?

I did this recently, to try and determine the costs of stepping up from a 320 to a 480. I came up with about a 25% increase in operational and maintenance costs (bot counting the boat payment). Good thing for me, I didn’t do this when I bought the 320! o_O
